World of Palamar Website Revamp

The last time I worked on any of our websites was probably around 2015. Even before that, I put together a web page for my fantasy world, Palamar. Immediately after I published that page I... wandered off. The original page was basically just a wall of text, plus a few images of book covers on the bottom–an abbreviated list that I apparently never kept updated. The logo up top didn't even work. It's never worked. I never did figure out why, and honestly the original Palamar logo was awful enough...

Whatever Happened to Jamie Anyway?

I disappeared for quite a while there. Distanced, out of it, unfocused, and yes sometimes unresponsive too. I'm sorry. Things just got out of hand. Bear with me; this is likely going to be a long letter. It's not easy to sum up 6+ years of life.
Where I've Been: Tyler TechnologiesTyler Technologies hired me almost exactly six years ago (Feb 22, 2016) to work on Munis, an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system used by schools and local governments around the nation. It's an ancient program that...

Statistics and Math For Indie Authors and Publishers

This is probably an odd post to start 2021 with. It's certainly an odd title, and I'm okay with that. Truth is that the vast majority of people these days have attention spans that can be measured in nanoseconds. My website's bounce rate is hilariously bad—like many other sites, visitors often leave before the page even completes loading!
As a content creator, that gives you basically two choices:
You can fret, worry, waste hours tracking metrics, and invest countless hours in learning how to make...November 13, 2020
What Am I Waiting For?
For months it's felt like my whole life has been on pause. I work, nearly every day, and then I keep working. Sometimes I work nights and weekends, often putting in twelve to sixteen hours a day. I live alone, and see probably three people a month in real life. There's nobody around to tell me to stop. All this work is mostly for my day job, but I haven't been sleeping well for the past ten months or so, and often wake around 3 AM to start my day. Those early morning hours are typically invested...

Stolen Dreams -- Now Available

My new novella, Stolen Dreams, is now available in ebook stores everywhere.
It is the near future. Most people have a cranial implant for connecting directly to the Net, brain-first. When people die, all of their thoughts, hopes, dreams, and memories are extracted via this interface and encoded in the Soul Bank. Every person is stored indefinitely and made available for anyone to visit. Many partake of this opportunity to learn from the lives and mistakes of others.
But the memories are just data ...

I Can't Believe It's 2020
What happened to the last few years? Sadly, I know the answer: I was busy working. Four years ago I accepted a position that has been consuming an increasing amount of my time and life. I'm sure I do it to myself. In fact, several people at work keep telling me to work less, yet I still consistently put in 50-60 hours a week (down from last year's 70-80+ hours, so I'm getting better).
The problem is that I care too much about the product I'm building. There are a lot of responsibil...
