You get to create something out of air, something tangible that could potentially touch people that you've never met. Having that type of access to the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life is indescribable. It's also a welcome respite from the rigors of your daily life; you get to escape to the moors of England for a few hours, or you get to become a murderous antagonist hellbent on destroying your characters. It sure takes your mind off the everyday things, like paying the water bill. ;)

With every pro, however, there is always a con. In regards to being a writer, it is sometimes hard to shut off that aforementioned imagination. You are often so "in your head" that you read too much into things, ruminate too long on simplistic things. Create fantastic scenarios out of absolutely nothing at all. It's not a good formula for relaxation. Also, being a writer is a very solitary sport. If you have someone significant in your life, they have to understand that writing is your job, something important enough to escape to for a few hours at a time. Sometimes it's difficult to "turn your mind off" while you're spending quality time with your loved ones so you really need to make a concerted effort to be a part of things.

In my situation, I have a wonderful supporter who may not understand why I write, but understands how important it is to me. Any time that I'm not around people, I'm always writing. Whether it's driving in my car and listening to music, my mind is never far from my book. I'm always actively brainstorming and looking out for that next piece of inspiration...(less)

“Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with pain. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling but start. Start and don’t stop. Start where you are, with what you have. Just... start.”
