The author grew up just down the road from where the early launches in the Space Race were made, and in fact, was close enough to Apollo 11 to feel the heat of the engines when it left for the moon. His dad worked at the Space Center from the earliest days of Mercury until well into the time of the lunar landings. When we read about space today, we don’t see much about those years, and we see even less about the remarkable things that went on in the background to make those space flights happen. That’s what "Behind the Missiles" is about: the human side of the Space Race.
