Smashwords Interview: Suzy Davies, Author of "The Cave," Just Launched!
Interview with Suzy Davies
What's the story behind your latest book?
When I heard about The Wild Boars Football Team trapped in the Thai cave at Tham Luang, I felt I had to follow the story. Very quickly, from my research, a parallel story was unveiled: The Story of The Princess at Sip Song Panna, or the reclining Princess of The Mountain, as she is sometimes known as. Enter a Buddhist monk, thought by some to be the reincarnation of her suitor - a stable boy, and I had a vision of a story below the surface of the text. It was the story of a mysterious underworld of mermaids and the mystical princess guarding the cave and protecting the boys and all those who took part in the dangerous rescue effort.
I followed the story day by day, did my research and wrote day and night! It fascinated me. Needless to say, I was saddened by the loss of one True Hero, but he did not die in vain.
My story weaves the mystical tale of mermaids and The Princess into the more factual action elements of the rescue in my book.
I felt energized as I was writing my tale, and of course, as with all my books, it has a happy ending.
What motivated you to become an Indie Author?
This is my first self-published book. My first ever book, "Johari's Window," was published by a hybrid publishing house, SilverWood, the second book was traditionally published by Snow Leopard Publishing, and the third, "Luna The Moon Pig: The Pig Who Hid," by Quizicat Productions.
My decision to self-publish this book was based on the fact that I knew how popular the story would be with people all over the world, and I wanted control over the publishing process to bring you the book quickly, and to ensure that the book was of good quality with everything just as I wanted it to be.
I'm honored to be able to say that world-acclaimed award-winning Artist, Animator, and Educator, Sheila Graber, read this book and decided to do the cover design, which is stunning!
What Charity Are You Helping With "The Cave," and Why?
I'm delighted that 10% of all book profits from my brand new release, “The Cave,” on Smashwords, inspired by the Thai Cave, will go to my favorite swimming charity - SWIMSAFE SHARKS.
When I was a child, I nearly drowned in a river because I couldn’t swim. My dad saved me! So, it is a passion of mine to ensure that each and every child in Thailand has the opportunity to learn to swim and keep safe in water.
Here’s what SWIMSAFE SHARKS say about their charity:
"The SWIMSAFE SHARKS initiative helps Thai school children learn to swim with the Survival Swimming Curriculum. We work alongside Thai schools training teachers to be instructors and promote water safety in general. Thailand is a country in the epicenter of the world drowning crisis and swimming is generally not taught to children."
What Books Are You Writing Now?
I'm always writing! I've just completed the sequel to "Luna The Moon Pig: The Pig Who Hid." I have another children's story completed - top secret at the moment. I am still writing "The Blue Talisman," an adult novel, with supernatural elements.
Who Did You Write The Cave For?
This book will be of interest to parents, grandparents, life coaches, sports enthusiasts and exercise coaches, motivational coaches, psychologists, counselors, teachers, travel guides, travel agents, movie buffs, and young adults who are interested in things like sport, travel, adventures, films and exciting tales of heroes, and heroines.
What are the Literary Influences for "The Cave"
Writing "The Cave" was a very real challenge for me.
It wasn't just the challenge of getting the story out while the drama of "The Thai Cave," was still fresh in people's imaginations. The biggest challenge was how to weave mystical elements into my Young Adult/Adult Fiction Book, and still maintain the action/adventure drama.
Quite recently, I researched the work of Hans Christian Andersen, one of the major influences on my writing. I was enchanted again on re-reading, "The Little Mermaid," - for which I have a particular fondness, if only because of a road trip I did, many years ago, all across Denmark. I got to see Odense, and the statue of the "Ariel" inspired mermaid of his most famous fairy tale.
In my story, "The Cave," I wanted to honor The True Hero, who delivered supplies of oxygen tanks to the cave, and sadly, lost his life in service to others. I borrowed from Hans Christian Andersen's notion that there is a heaven, and that when we die we become (People) of The Air. Hans Christian Andersen gave me a poetic reference point with which I could describe death - a taboo subject in Western Societies - and soften the blow, without diminishing the heroism of The True Hero, who did not die in vain.
Mermaids feature in my story, "The Cave," and help to convey the enchantment I intended.
Of course, when I researched Thai culture, I decided that Thai Mysticism would be a predominant theme in the book, and Dulong or mermaids have been spotted out to sea, off Thailand's picturesque coastline. I was delighted when I discovered this fact!
When I delved further into Thai Folklore, I uncovered the magical story of The Princess of The Mountain, and the tale of her love for a stable boy, which was forbidden.
Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales feature princesses and magical helpers who "fly" to castles to spy on them, in order to help suitors, who have to pass a series of tests. These elements in Andersen's tales helped me create Khun Mae - a Shaman Mother figure, who could "communicate" and tune in to what was happening to her son, Lek, from a distance.
Of course, it is well known that The Wild Boars passed their rites of passage because of the effort of International Rescue Experts from all over the world. But what also kept the boys going was communication with loved ones, the thought of "home," significant others, and what that love meant to them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Doing what I love. Being Creative.
Communicating with people. Making people happy.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm really grateful to have a good fanbase.
Who are your favorite authors?
My long-term adult book favorites are Virginia Woolf, Nabokov, James Joyce, George Eliot, Hardy, Isabel Allende, Daphne Du Maurier. I read avidly and I'm compiling an Indie Author top 10, across all genres, which will be revealed soon!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sound of computer keys tapping, the smell of coffee.

Anna Stephan, Champion Musher, Winner of The Junior Iditarod, 2019 talks to Suzy Davies, Author of “The Girl in The Red Cape: A Mystical Sled Ride” Coming to Amazon Soon!
Who or what first inspired you to be a musher?
My father was a musher back in the day. When my sister and I were 7, he bought us our first sled dogs from a kennel in Anchorage.
How did you feel when you won The Junior Iditarod?
I was super-excited, and very proud of the dogs.
Which sled dog is your favorite, and why?
That’s a hard decision, they are all so special. If I had to choose one, it would probably be Sky. I raised her from a pup and she is one of my best lead dogs.
What advice would you give to a would-be musher?
It’s all about the dogs. Take good care of them, and they will take care of you.
Have you ever met a wild animal on the trail? What happened?
Yes, a moose attacked us on the trail once. It was very scary. The moose ran up to the team and stomped at a few of the dogs. We were very lucky no one got hurt.
Who is your closest musher friend? How did you meet him or her?
Probably our neighbour The Redingtons; my father raced dogs with them when he was younger.
Friendships in the mushing community are important. How do you keep these friendships when you compete with each other?
It's not hard. Everyone is helpful and supportive of one another.
Do you listen to music when you are dog sledding?
Yes, usually on long training runs.
I've heard you play the violin? What's your favorite piece to play?
I don’t really have a favorite, but I do play a lot of hymns.
What are your dreams and wishes for your future?
I think I’d like to be a teacher.
What is your favorite place in Alaska, and why?
I really like Hatcher's Pass. They have some great hiking trails there, and it’s a good place to snowboard in the winter.

A Pigtionary of Piggies by Suzy Davies Copyright 2021, All Rights Reserved
There are piggies of The Woods,
there are piggies of The Sea.
Not all piggies are equal;
this is clear to me.
There are piggies who sing -
and they make a lot of noise.
There are piggies - stuffed animals;
it's clear they're simply toys.
There are piggies who are GLAM,
there are piggies who are DRAM,
there are piggies who simply are TRAGICAL.
But of all the piggies in The Piggy Universe -
Luna - The Moon Pig is most MAGICAL!
With the WIGGLIEST of tails,
and a heart that's full of LOVE,
LUNA - THE MOON PIG's
guided by the STARS above.
Yes, Luna's the piggy
with CHOCOLATE-DROP EYES,
and wherever she wanders,
there's a SHINING MOON on high!
There are piggies of a season,
when the summer is here,
there are piggies of the springtime,
when the flowers all appear,
there are piggies of the autumn,
when the tumbling leaves turn brown -
and piggies just for Christmas,
when Santa comes to town.
But, whatever the weather,
LUNA is THE ONE!
She's happy and clever,
full of OINKINESS and FUN!
So, I'd like to invite YOU,
without further ado,
to have a friend in LUNA;
she's here the whole year through!

The Snow Queen by Suzy Davies
Let me take you back to London Town, in the old days. A sister and brother live in an upstairs tenement. They are poor and not yet worldly-wise. My book, “The Snow Queen” takes you to this London you may already know or have read about. But although the metropolis is very real, it is seen through a magic lens in the mind's eye.
The city shivers with chiming voices on fragile winds that sigh. The presence of an ethereal beauty rides the wintry landscape. Children are in a playground on the swings. Back and for, back and for, they ride. Time stands still in an innocent world of cars and trains, traffic lights, steaming chips and ketchup, Christmas trees and oily rainbows on cracked concrete… and Mum at home awaiting them…
Yet as they grow, and the years pass slowly, someone else - a wizard - is watching. He has a plan. To conjure a spell to ensnare a boy, a teenager of good character, a hard-working boy, Adam. He will be The First Slave.
And so, through this dark conjuring, this malevolent wizardry, the world of reality and the world of magic collide. The dark force of the wizard’s magic will be known and felt. And the children of the world will be held captives forever…
Far, far away, over the ocean, all the enchantment and wonder of a glittering winter; a winter in The Snowlands, a place of mystical animals that tread the land and soar on the wind awaits. This is a mythological land of dreams.
A shoemaker is making a boot fit for a king. A princess awaits in her Danish castle with her horses who follow the star of Pegasus. A seamstress in Rovaniemi is sewing a gown of sparkling threads and jewel-drops, fit for a queen.
The Snow Queen resides in the frozen glass Ice Palace in Norway. She is waiting for her wizard. Together, they will be an evil power couple, and rule till the end of days.
A Snow Goose rides through the storm, carrying Sean to his one true love.
A brave dwarf has a plan…
Adam slumbers, a prisoner, alone in the fairy tower on the west wing of The Ice Palace. Beside his bed, a game of chess, the black king toppled over.
Aragog lies in wait in her glistening web …and always, there’s dark magic…
The wind whistles through the skeleton tree. In her crystal ball, the old gypsy caught a glimpse of what would befall her daughter. The three sisters cast their spells, harnessing good and the forces of nature.
There is yet a ray of hope. Truth be told in the prophecy of The Book of The Ancients.
In a fair world of good and evil, there’s a battle ahead. Justice is all in this moral universe. Darkness consumes itself. The Light shines forever. Shimmering rainbows dance through shadows in the snow. Celestial light glows from the heavens.
The world of “The Snow Queen” is a romantic world; a fairytale, of castles and queens, rivalry, jealousy, revenge, destiny and inheritance. It is a world of sacrifice and redemption.
My book is an epic love story. Bryony, a young warrior with dark gypsy eyes, is the heroine. Over the sea, as if in a dream, she rides, and back again, on an ocean of forgiveness, to a land, long forgotten, back in time…
The Idea for The Snow Queen
My book is a reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s original story. The seed of an idea to have a gypsy protagonist in my story came from my late dad’s cousin who was a television producer for Children’s BBC Wales. At a churchyard gate, in Llanberis, she informed me that on my late dad’s side of the family, we are descended from Roma people.
My Writing Process
I have written at length about my writing process on Goodreads. Basically, I combine plotter and pantser tactics. I have an outline of the story and a sense of an ending before I begin writing. However, I think you can overplan, so I revise and adjust my ending at intervals in line with the resolution of the story. The characters “tell me” which way to go. It’s a process of forward and back, and thorough editing before it all comes together. I think spontaneity is what makes writing full of life and exciting. From the seed of an idea, to outlining, writing and several edits, it takes me about 18 months to write a book this length. Part of this is because I enjoy tackling a variety of projects so I am never working on one project full time until I reach the editing stage.
A Meeting of Hearts, Hands and Minds
After writing my book, I wondered how best I might share it with people across the globe. It was just like a fairytale, a dream come true, when I discovered, quite by chance, the enchanting multi faceted world of air and paper created by the world-acclaimed papercut artist, Bit Vejle, who is the founder of The Museum for Paperart in Denmark. My fairytale journey did not end there. I revisited Musuem Odense, and found the courage to approach them with a view to featuring some of Hans Christian Andersen’s papercuts in the paperback and hardback editions of my work. I was so fortunate that they agreed, much to my delight! Now our book is a dream come true - something I have dreamed about all my life!
Book Blurb
The Robber Girl is back! Bryony has a special destiny, foretold in The Book of The Ancients. With her dark eyes on a handsome Roma boy, Sean, and a gypsy crown, she has a battle to win, cheating death. She must rescue Adam from the Snow Queen’s web of evil, defeating the wizard and his dark sorcery. If she fails, the evil couple will cast a maleficent shadow of doom across the world, enslaving all children until the end of time. In this tale of romance, magic, rivalry, inheritance and destiny, a heartwarming epic journey awaits.
