And I do nothing...for a little while. Sometimes the best thing I can do is wait it out and the juices will start to flow on their own again when they are ready. Then there are the times when the block is big and weeks pass with no sign of it lifting. That is when I force myself to sit down and write something, anything, just to get back in the groove. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be part of a book I am working on or anything like that...it doesn't even have to make sense. As long as I am writing something that involves creativity (journal entries and things like that do not do it for me), it usually helps get me back into the swing of things. :)(less)

Sometimes I get so deep into what I am doing that the entire world fades away and I am in a state almost like meditation. It's amazing. I do not think there is any high a person could get from any drug that compares with the feeling you have when you finish a story you are working on. It is....wonderful. There are moments when you are writing that you create something so perfect in the story that you cannot believe it came from you. I believe there is this well of sorts where novels come from and you dip into it without knowing, pulling ideas out like fish. That is wonderful as well...that moment when you re-read something you've written and it sounds so perfect you cannot believe it's yours. There are many things about writing that just make any of the negatives seem small and insignificant. Man, when the story is flowing out of you, it is the best feeling in the world. (less)

Devil's Night Series and the One Year Reading Slump

I did not, in fact, re-read all of the Vampire Chronicles in 2023. In fact, with the exception of Beloved by the incredible Toni Morrison, I did not, in fact, finish any books in 2023. I tried. Fucking hell, I tried. But the depression I was buried in last year was at that level it gets to when the pit is so deep, you can't see the faintest hint of light above you and when it is that deep, I can't Read more of this blog post »

“the feeling of a steering wheel under one’s hand, the ability to pick up a receiver and call someone miles away, knowing that a train could carry you to see a friend in a fraction of the time horse travel would have taken, all of this somehow made the world seem smaller. When people saw the world as a smaller place would they finally realize that each person, each creature they shared it with was indeed a neighbor and that hatred without just cause was indeed destructive?”

“In spite of all the refinements of civilization that conspired to make art--the dizzying perfection of the string quartet or the sprawling grandeur of Fragonard's canvases--beauty was savage. It was as dangerous and lawless as the earth had been eons before man had one single coherent thought in his head or wrote codes of conduct on tablets of clay. Beauty was a Savage Garden.”

I will check him out. I am currently reading King's book Doctor Sleep and if you liked The Shining and you haven't read Doctor Sleep yet, I highly recommend it. I was a little worried about the way it might turn out because it has been so long since the original but this is one sequel that is every bit as good as the original. I picked it up from the library yesterday and I'm on page 350 because I can't put it down. It is one of those books that you schedule your day around reading if you can get away with it. :)

Catherine Pet Cemetery stuck with me for a very long time, too! I like a lot of Stephen King's works. I'm enjoying Kealan Patrick Burke for some fresh horror/mystery. Check him out if you haven't.

Glad to make your reader friendship. Hope to trade lots of snark and smart with you!

Thank you! I am also notorious for reading ahead. I am the person that will read the last few pages of a book just to see if everything turns out alright. haha I love reading about the South. I was born and raised in Ohio but the bulk of my family originally came from Virginia and I have a life-long obsession with New Orleans so I credit these two things with my love of stories involving the south. Perhaps my love of Gone with the Wind contributed to that a bit too. lol People in the south always seem to tell the greatest stories, out loud or in print. I think it is because story telling is such a part of the culture. And I think that if a novel set in the south is done properly, it can really convey that ability. Anyway, I am glad that you liked the preview and I really hope you enjoy the book. :)

Nikki OMG girl! I was on your blog and read the extended sample for amazon and then because I'm notorious for reading ahead, I read chapter 8 on here. I was in tears after reading about Luke sending her off to live it up. Now I have to buy the book after payday to see what happens! I love your character development, the arc of the story and the real emotion behind the goodbye. I felt that I was there, watching him cry bloody tears as she slaps him.

Also, looking at your book shelves and lists...I live in the area of the Cane River and where the Ya-Ya's are from. Both are about a 45 minute drive away and before I moved back, I'd read them to 'come home'.
