I used tools by some other creative people: "Godbound", "Fate Condensed", and "Gamemaster's Apprentice" among others. The various rules and cards and dice helped decide some of what happened, allowing for me to be surprised as I developed the story scenario. I originally wanted to do a plain power-fantasy story but used Fate rules and gave the heroine very limited starting powers, which made her training and growth a crucial part of the story.

An example of the randomness in book 1: I had decided heroine Ruyo was going to go to a seedy bar to draw out some kidnappers, but didn't know how it'd go down. I drew cards that said things like "Beverages. Magic amplifies. Injure distant food. Strengthen brazen rage. Fix disappointing foreigner." So what happened was, Ruyo was magically playing with her drink and accidentally sprayed a large, angry gangster's food. And then I wrote up combat stats and played through the fight, making me write text to explain the back-and-forth events of the brawl. Fun to do!(less)

A strong beginning for a series about a fantasy hunting lodge where adventurers hang out to hunt powerful monsters. It's interesting right away because the hero isn't an experienced hunter yet and is a centaur, which actually matters to the story rat ...more
