C. Andrew Martin, DNP, MS, RN, ACRN, CHPN® (www.candrewmartin.com) has been the RN Medical Case Manager in the Positive Living through Understanding and Support (PLUS) Program at AIDS Services of Austin, Inc. His primary roles are client retention in both HIV and specialty medical care and HIV medication adherence education and support, with ASA currently having a client community viral load suppression outcome at 83%. Andrew is a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC, www.nursesinaidscare.org) and served as the ANAC Austin Chapter Board Secretary for three years. His scholarly inquiry project was conducted at ASA and his dissertation is entitled, A Mobile Phone HIV Medication Adherence Intervention: Care4Today(TM) Mobile Health Manager (http://gradworks.umi.com/10/01/100110...)¬. A poster presentation of the scholarly inquiry project was displayed at the 2016 Texas HIV/STD Conference.
HIV/AIDS has been both life changing and life affirming for Andrew over the past twenty years. Life changing was the AIDS diagnosis of his partner, Gil, in 1993. Following Gil’s death in 1996, Andrew chose to pursue a career in nursing and work with those affected by HIV, in addition to those experiencing end-of life issues. He chronicled the HIV/AIDS caregiving journey with his partner in his Benjamin Franklin Gold Award winning memoir, Reflections of a Loving Partner: Caregiving at the End of Life (https://www.amazon.com/Reflections-Lo...). Life affirming is the privilege of working daily with a disenfranchised cohort of HIV-infected individuals, supporting them in embracing that HIV/AIDS no longer needs to be a death sentence with HIV medication adherence and retention in medical care.
Andrew is a cyclist/fundraiser in the annual Hill County Ride for AIDS (www.hillcountryride.org). In 2014, Andrew chose to cycle sixty miles in honor of his sixtieth birth year and was the fourth highest fund raiser that year. He has brought in over fifteen thousand dollars in donations during the past four years of participating in the ride. Active in the HIV/AIDS community, he has been the featured speaker at such Central Texas events as the and 2014 HIV/AIDS Aging Coalition’s Symposium (https://hivandaging.wordpress.com/) and the 2015 16th Annual AIDS Candlelight Memorial, in addition to national events, such as Couch Coach, presented to both HIV-infected individuals and AIDS Services Organization (ASO) case managers with the intention of fostering caring connections between clients and ASOs. Andrew strongly believes in educating the next generation of nurses in HIV/AIDS care and regularly precepts University of Texas Austin nursing students, in addition to teaching online nursing courses at Saint Joseph’s College in Maine and the University of Saint Mary in Kansas.
