The Abandoned House

I took a walk along the familiar path of my childhood memories.
After three years of treading on it with shoes woven from nostalgia, I'm back home.
For a bit.
The road that winds through the colony seems narrower.
The edges have been gnawed at by time and the ever-expanding palates of people's real life Lego dreams.
Houses have become gargantuan over the years.
And it has not even been that long.

I don’t know if this book is for everyone. I’d say it’s for a specific niche of women with aging parents and grown children and body with a mind of its own.
It spoke to me. But I don’t know if I can recommend it anyone not in that phase of life, becau

Very Japanese. Very food and feminist. And murdery.
Def not to be read through the western feminist or murder fiction lens. This is its own thing and it’s so good!

I feel like this was supposed to be like The Russian Doll - but it honestly just seemed like a book that was stuck in first draft. It never truly began. Never knew the protagonist for who she was and only through the lens of what she didn’t like or t ...more

3.5 to be exact. I loved parts of it. Understood most of it. But felt some parts had details that would have been better not included.

I believe this is the sort of book that cannot have a uniform consensus. You get out of it what your bring to it.

This was a good read. But some parts were over-convoluted. Also, the protagonist is 50 and reads as much younger. That could be a me problem. ;)
Also, unrelated to the book itself - I read a library copy and someone who read the book before me decided

“She wondered whether all marriages started out this way. Whether this initial stress and adjustment, push and pull and tremors and shakes were common to all relationships. Maybe the fact that they had started off as a long-distance couple had shielded them from the pressures that normal couples in the same city went through. She wondered why all those relatives who had sat on her head asking her to get married had never mentioned this particular phase.”
Shweta Ganesh Kumar, A Newlywed’s Adventures in Married Land

“She logged in and read a few of her old posts, smiling at the issues she had raged about and shaking her head at how some of the rants now seemed pretentious and judgmental. She had grown so much without even realizing she had. Mythili typed out the draft, spicing it up subtly and after a last read, she published it. Admiring the brand new post on her main page, she realized she missed writing. She had barely written anything since her last by-line. Typing this out, she felt like she was back with a long-lost friend who understood her. It was like snuggling up in a warm blanket when a thunderstorm raged outside.”
Shweta Ganesh Kumar, A Newlywed’s Adventures in Married Land

“But with each step she took, Mythili realized why most people don’t go shopping alone. It’s because this mind of ours gets pretty damn busy. It starts analyzing every little stimulus you receive. And because you don’t have another human being walking next to you distracting you from all the little stuff you should be ignoring, your mind takes it upon itself to provide you with companionship and talk you through your life.”
Shweta Ganesh Kumar, A Newlywed’s Adventures in Married Land

“There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't sit still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest; Their's is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.”
Robert Service

“Two minds with but a single thought, two hearts that beat as one.”
Jasper Fforde, First Among Sequels

“After all, reading is arguably a far more creative and imaginative process than writing; when the reader creates emotion in their head, or the colors of the sky during the setting sun, or the smell of a warm summer's breeze on their face, they should reserve as much praise for themselves as they do for the writer - perhaps more.”
Jasper Fforde, The Well of Lost Plots

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”
Lewis Carroll
