I like to soak in any type of hot water, that also works to relax the mind and let the ideas flow naturally (vs. through force and effort.) Another method is to ask the story what it wants to say, what it's trying to tell me or express through me. I often feel like I am discovering the story rather than writing it. (less)

The advice you hear about writing, or becoming an author, is based on other people's metrics. These milestones might be money, number of books, prestige, best selling status, etc. People write for many different reasons so be clear about your reason. That way you can know when you are successful. Compare writing to running a marathon. Most human beings would be over-the-moon proud just to say they walked/ran one of these. In many ways writing is similar. It's a long journey and the simple completion of that journey is often its own reward. (less)

I can't recall a triggering event but when the premise of time being stolen from unsuspecting people first hit me, I couldn't stop wondering how it happened and how it would work itself out.
