I wanted to write for history buffs and nerdy kids and the general intelligent reader. (That would be you, right?)

Officially my degree is in the history of the Indian sub-continent, with strong sub-fields in European imperialism and Islam. I feel strongly that the West in general and Americans in particular need to know more about the history of other parts of the world. That belief is often reflected in the topics I choose to write about, whether I'm working on a

Tiny Broadwick: “First Lady of Parachuting”

Georgia Ann “Tiny”[1] Thompson Broadwick (1893-1978) fell in love with aviation in 1907 at the age of 14 when she attended an aerial show at the North Carolina State Fair. The show featured pioneering balloonist Charles Broadwick (c. 1875-1943), who went up in a hot air balloon, climbed over the side and parachuted down. Tiny later told a reporter “When I saw that balloon go up, I knew

“Influenced by the European depression of 1873, Kautsky’s writings depict a capitalist system spiraling toward its death. He emphasized the inevitability of the eventual triumph of socialism and rejected the fundamental premises of social democracy. He argued that the role of a socialist party was not to create a transition to socialism, but to educate workers about the nature of capitalism and prepare them for the class struggle that would bring about its demise.”
