I am a recently retired associate professor of English; I taught at a regional campus of Indiana University for 17 years. Prior to that, I attended the University of South Florida, where I earned a Master's in English with a concentration in rhetoric and composition, and the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned a PhD.
Before returning to school to earn my degrees, I wrote and published three suspense novels and two romances. I've self-published new, somewhat revised editions of two of them: King of the Roses (St. Martin's, 1983) and Blood Lies (Bantam, 1989). My trick is to make each day's quota not just doable, but absurdly doable. I set very easy goals that I can always stick with: right now, just a single college-ruled notebook page. Usually, I have to stop myself at three or more pages. . . . That easy start gets me to sit down and get going. Then the characters start talking, and we're off!(less)
