Soquel Baumgardner (pronounced SOH-kel) is a writer of chick lit, urban fantasy, alternative historical fiction, and fairy tales. She uses her degree in psychology to create complex characters. Her first job, working the night shift at a nuclear power plant, gave her a taste for the strange and unusual. Her last job, teaching creative writing to students in grades six through twelve at a private school, also brought her face-to-face with the strange and unusual. She has lived in fifty-one different homes, including next door to the famous Oak Alley Plantation and in a Victorian house in the middle of a California broccoli field said to be haunted by a ghost in a spacesuit. Again, strange and unusual.

That's easy! Middle Earth, as in J.R.R. Tolkien's LOTR world.

I was named after the elven queen Galadriel (my middle name is Gladrielle) and have always wished to be like her; an elect lady of light known for her noble and generous spirit. It would be a perk to have her ability to peer into the minds of others and judge them fairly and with mercy. And let's not forget her fairy-like wardrobe. Yes, please!

Yet, as much as I would enjoy living in the ethereal Lothlorien, I am at heart a hobbit. I would thrive in the Shire. Living in a hobbit hole eating six meals a day, going to bed late and getting up late, spending time reading, discussing genealogy, telling stories, daydreaming in the garden, and not traveling much - unless adventure calls. Beautiful! There's a lot to unpack in this story, from which realm creatures belong in when they leave life, to the way we see ourselves based on the perception of others. I enjoyed spending time with the undead fox.

This story has unique magic in it and interesting stakes. I enjoyed the exploration of memory and meaning. It is important to hold onto both the good and the bad in order to create balance and understand truth.

I listened to the audiobook and it was fantastic! I think it adds another needs layer as the narrator does a good alien voice for 'Rocky.' I liked that our hero, an MS science teacher, makes a conscious effort to watch his language and is tryin

“That’s really all they ask of us—our parents; our lovers, husbands, and wives; our children and dear friends. That we carry them gently in our lives as they carried us in theirs. Not with crushing sadness, for they do not wish such weight upon us. But with lightness and warmth. God bless them for the memories they left for us that make carrying them with joy possible. The wisdom and love they bequeathed us. The joy and comfort they brought to us as they carried us through life so that now we might carry them forever in our hearts—without bitterness, without crushing sadness. When someone has loved us well and long, we need not buckle beneath the weight of sorrow. Instead, we can carry them with us with gratitude, completeness, and joy.”
