As a young reader, I gravitated toward thrillers and horror stories. I didn't put much thought into why, simply believing it was the unstoppable monsters who drew me in. As I got older, I realized it was my curiosity about how these monsters would be stopped that hooked me. Life can throw us horrific events, leaving us feeling out of control as we face these unimaginable "monsters". But like our heroes, we can stare these monsters in the eyes and win. We may not have control over what's thrown at us, but we do have control over how we respond -- and knowing that makes us incredibly strong. ...more

“I pause, realizing I too am still battling life's bullies. We just call them by different names: stereotypes, biases, social expectations. Different names, the same result, leaving us with the feeling of being worthless.”

“He shuddered, but not from the cold. It was a feeling of aloneness that made him shudder.”
Stephen King, Pet Sematary

“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig-tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked . . . I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig-tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Laurel Hightower, Crossroads

“Sometimes I think you'd cross the street to step in dogshit.”
Stephen King, The Stand

Jessica Webb I was writing a scene today where the protagonist's ex calls her cell phone - it's a strained relationship at best. She had set her phone to play the song 'Whatever' by Godsmack anytime he calls. As I wrote this scene, I looked down at my own phone and thought, 'Not a bad idea, I should do that.'

Jessica Webb I recently watched the movie 'Gravity' to gain inspiration for the story I'm currently writing. In my mind, I envision my main character sharing similar traits with Sandra Bullock in several of her films. However, I must admit that it was George Clooney's character who truly captured my attention. Despite his brief role in the film, his character left such a lasting impression that I'm now considering writing a full story inspired by him.

So many great ideas, so little time...
