Thanks so much for your question. For me, placing autobiographical tidbits into another context (a different story) really makes them the story's instead of mine. I might be inspired by them and set them carefully and purposefully into the storyline, but I want the story to own them at that point. It's so interesting to me to examine how something that has happened in my life, when it happens to my characters instead, becomes a new experience, most often with different results. I think that's one of the very exciting things about writing fiction as it allows you to re-experience real life with different outcomes or from a different perspective. I shy away from using too many autobiographical elements since I want to be sure the work stands as fiction, but here and there, these kinds of details can really enrich a story. I hope that's helpful feedback. Have a great day! - Kerri Lee(less)

But I usually force myself to push through and get something out on the page anyway, knowing I can go back and clean it up later, or worst case scenario delete it and pretend it never happened. But if I'm really struggling, I might just take a break and do something else for a while until my mind regroups. Writing should be enjoyable and when it starts to not feel that way, I think it's important to be kind to your mind and trust that you'll pick up again in a little while.(less)

Notes from a Hardscrabble Childhood

On the occasion of the launch of TELL ME ONE THING, I published a personal essay with LitHub about my own upbringing in challenging circumstances:

I hope you'll give it a read.

As an author, I often draw from personal experiences to work out situations for my characters. Sometimes it's a way to test alternative paths, sometimes it's to exercise demons, sometim Read more of this blog post »
