Animal Magnet is my first published book, and so, admittedly, I was probably too naive to feel daunted by attempting to write it. I've always admired authors who experiment with form and do not feel bound by the constraints of a linear narrative, so the idea for Animal Magnet had been there for a long time. And the truth is, although writing a book is a solitary task, bringing it to publication is not. There were many people along the way (just look at the acknowledgements) who helped to shape the book and make each iteration of it better than the last. In a word, the final product represents the work and expertise of many people. When I look at Animal Magnet now, I am slightly in awe, too, but not because I think it's good, but because something that started as an idea in my head now exists in the outside world. (less)

Thankfully, the short story never did get written, however, the premise stayed with me. I liked the idea of such docile animals becoming intelligent, and what would they do as sentient beings. Add to that, my love for gritty noir, and the result was Gwousz Affair. A scifi-noir offering that's been described as everything from Kafkaesque to Burroughs-like to Swiftian. (less)

A Good Rush of Blood by Matt Phillips
"A gritty crime fiction tale with a bona fide whodunit mystery along for the ride, A Good Rush of Blood feels a lot like the beginning of a series featuring drug runner/part time sleuth Creely Nash, but maybe that's just me wanting to read more of her" Read more of this review »

A Good Rush of Blood by Matt Phillips
"This is a book from talented author Matt Phillips that pulls no punches. It follows Creeley from her running away from a bad childhood and when we meet her years later, she is a mule for a drug lord from Portland. On one of her runs she discovers tha" Read more of this review »

A Good Rush of Blood by Matt Phillips
"After reading 4-5 Matt Phillips novels, I thought I'd figured him out. A solid crime novelist mining the underbelly of San Diego much like Elmore Leonard did Detroit in the 1970s. Offbeat stories and characters, crisp dialogue, plus all the sights, s" Read more of this review »

“Not all was as it seemed, he realized in the simple rendering of a child’s comprehension. Not all was good and honorable in this world. And for young Robrecht, there was something thrilling in this simple fact. For him, it was as if on that morning long ago the colors of the sky and earth—the dirt road, the brick and plaster buildings, the gleaming sea—had suddenly become not just brighter and more vibrant but also richer—the deeper shades of a complex and multifarious world.”
Gary Anderson, Best of All Possible Worlds

“. . . I spent much of my youth wondering about the verticality of my own biological progenitors. So that when I reached the age of majority, I set out to discover who they were, only to uncover a shameful parade of bastards, miscreants, and foolhardy eccentrics”
Gary Anderson, Animal Magnet

“Does being self-aware magically negate all our other predatory instincts? After all, humans put the ape in apex predator. We are the best of the best. Top drawer. Our only natural enemy is, well, God, and he’s really quite wishy-washy when it comes to predation. The whole mercy and forgiveness thing weakens his predatory resolve.”
Gary Anderson, Animal Magnet

“It seems to me that anyone whose library consists of a Kindle lying on a table is some sort of bloodless nerd.”
Penelope Lively

“The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity. (One is unable to notice something because it is always before one’s eyes.) The real foundations of his enquiry do not strike a man at all”
Ludwig Wittgenstein

“The lie is elaborate and exact.”
John Newlove, The Night the Dog Smiled

“‎Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.”
Voltaire
