Mary Reynolds Thompson is a facilitator of poetry and journal therapy dedicated to bringing forth the Wild Soul Story. This new story is rooted in our oneness with nature and a vision of the world in which the wild landscapes of both Earth and soul can thrive. As a little girl, Mary's wild soul was awakened by family vacations spent in Positano on the Amalfi coastline of southern Italy. She slept in mountain caves and rode a pig called Romana over dusty trails. Many years later, she would hike the Himalayas, backpack the Grand Tetons, and brave the blasting winds of Patagonia, deepening her connection to the sacred Earth. "Reclaiming the Wild Soul: How Earth's Landscapes Restore Us to Wholeness" was lauded by spiritual leaders and ecologist ...more

Mary Reynolds Thompson I try to get up early and write. My inner critic tends to sleep late, so I can get a head start on him if I start writing first thing in the morning.
Mary Reynolds Thompson Being engaged in a creative process, which I also consider a spiritual path, that is constantly engaging, absorbing, and mind- and soul-expanding.

“Walking” by Linda Hogan

Sometimes I hear it talking. The light of the sunflower was one language, but there are others, more audible. Once, in the redwood forest, I heard a beat, something like a drum or heart coming from the ground and trees and wind. That underground current stirred a kind of knowing inside me, a kinship and longing, a dream barely remembered that disappeared back to the body.

Another time, there was th

“To feel the breath of wildness come into your body is to reclaim your natural wholeness”
Mary Reynolds Thompson, Reclaiming the Wild Soul: How Earth's Landscapes Restore Us to Wholeness

“The same forces that created Earth created us. We are so much more magnificent than we imagine.”
Mary Reynolds Thompson, Reclaiming the Wild Soul: How Earth's Landscapes Restore Us to Wholeness

“The metaphor is perhaps the most fruitful power of man. Its efficacy verges on magic, and it seems a tool for creation which God forgot inside one of His creatures when He made him.”
José Ortega y Gasset

“Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the lake.”
Wallace Stevens

“Nature offers us a thousand simple pleasers- Plays of light and color, fragrance in the air, the sun's warmth on skin and muscle, the audible rhythm of life's stir and push- for the price of merely paying attention. What joy! But how unwilling or unable many of us are to pay this price in an age when manufactured sources of stimulation and pleasure are everywhere at hand. For me, enjoying nature's pleasures takes conscious choice, a choice to slow down to seed time or rock time, to still the clamoring ego, to set aside plans and busyness, and to simply to be present in my body, to offer myself up.

Respond to the above quote. Pay special attention to each of your five senses as you describe your surroundings. Also, you need to incorporate at least one metaphor and smile in your descriptions.”
Lorraine Anderson, Sisters of the Earth: Women's Prose and Poetry About Nature

“Nature has been for me, for as long as I remember, a source of solace, inspiration, adventure, and delight; a home, a teacher, a companion.”
Lorraine Anderson

“We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods
