I was walking along Emery Hill Street in London towards the bus stop when I felt someone touch the back of my neck. I turned to see who it was, but no one was there. In fact, no one was anywhere near me. As I tried to convince myself that I had imagined that feathery touch on the back of my neck, I wondered what any ghost would be doing on Emery Hill Street on a cold London evening. The germ of a story was beginning to infect me. The novel started from there.(less)
