Ian Patterson is an award winning author of science fiction, horror, and poetry. His debut, Transference, won the Colorado Book Award for science fiction in 2025, and is part of a complete series called The Narrator Cycle. His work aims to critique capitalism, inequality, and environmental destruction by centering philosophical discussions in the trappings of fast-paced, genre-bending narratives. He believes all people should have bodily autonomy, equality, freedom, and that a more just future can be built on compassion and empathy. He can usually be found on his bike somewhere in the mountains of Colorado, or spending time with his family and his two cats.

Image Jumansubo Plain in Susaki near Fukagawa, 1857 by Utagawa Hiroshige (Public Domain)Calm But For the Will of Men

A breeze ruffles across the clearing’s monochrome grass, splaying wide opposing haoris cast in the night’s colors—white as the pearlescent moon, black as the shadow in its wake.

Then, still.

There is no noise.

There are no words.

The breeze moves the treetops again. Two kimonos fly with it

Absolutely gorgeously written, and read in audio. The sentences here ooze with depth and wit and style. Model Home was haunting, and for me, more full of the raw pain from the darkness of humanity than something purely scary in the moment. An excelle ...more
