I had a real struggle trying to connect the two parts of this book, but do see the second part as essential to the "whole." Of course living the life and doing time are going to evoke different tones. I do think some of that irreverence reemerges in part two after my comeuppance.... Typos are like weeds, man, they seem to spring up spontaneously. I'll look out for those you pointed out.... FYI, next book is a family drama-type thing. Book 3 will be narrated by Satan ... so more irreverence to come, fear not!(less)

Where’s Paul?

[image error]News outlets have eagerly reported Paul Manafort’s referral to the “VIP” room in a Virginia county jail following revocation of his bail, conjuring image amongst many internet commenters of Club Fed: tennis anyone? That of course is not the case. The euphemism, common amongst ironical prison hacks, denotes the hole, administrative segregation, P.C. (At MCC Chicago, where I was held pr

Nicholas’s Recent Updates

Nicholas shared a quote
“That Christ was lucky or unlucky, that he was saved or used, seemed rather serious points of difference—even in the hurried-up atmosphere of the parish-house vestibule, drafty from the opening and closing of the outside door and at the same time smelling of steam from the wet woolen clothes that dripped melting snow into the heat registers.”
John Irving, A Prayer for Owen Meany

Nicholas shared a quote
Incandescence by Craig Nova
“I smell the thanatoid odor of the airplane's cabin, climb aboard, strap myself in. Maybe, Stargell. I think, this time you'll get to use the oxygen they're always promising. Then we'd feel that incandescence, all of us sucking at the yellow mask, staring at one another, our eyes popping with expectation, waiting for the blast of arctic air, the fun-house spin. You'd feel the blood jump then, Jack. That's when you'd know your skin was filled with magic”

Paul Auster
“I would not go so far as to say that he was a good person … but Boris had his own set of rules and he stuck to them. Unlike everyone else I had met here, he managed to float above his circumstances … It was as if he had imagined every possibility in advance, and therefore he was never surprised by what happened. Inherent in his attitude was a pessimism so deep, so devastating, so fully in tune with the facts, that it actually made him cheerful.”
Paul Auster, In the Country of Last Things

Anthony Burgess
“Youth is only being in a way like it might be an animal. No, it is not just like being an animal so much as being like one of these malenky toys you viddy being sold in the streets, like little chellovecks made out of tin and with a spring inside and then a winding handle on the outside and you wind it up grrr grrr grrr and off it itties, like walking, O my brothers. But it itties in a straight line and bangs straight into things bang bang and it cannot help what it is doing. Being young is like being like one of these malenky machines.”
Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange
