"Just as adorable as the first one.
Just as good the second time." |

"This book started out so strong! The set up and the first two-thirds were entertaining with just enough explanation of the magic system to understand, but not so much as to get bogged down. Then, we get to a point where one of the (immortal, centurie"

“And there was yet another difference between them. This one only visible to those who watched them keenly, studied the two boys over many moments and over many moons. But of course, no one could do that. Older Brother and Younger Brother were the only two people on earth. The difference was this: The older brother loved all thing, but the younger brother loved only himself. You would think such a thing would be readily apparent in a person, even obvious, but no, it isn't. Such a thing is often opaque and easily masked. And could take a lifetime to see, whether we love ourselves only or everything equally.”

“A contemporary joke: An airplane carrying Hitler, Goering, and Goebbels crashes. All three are killed. Who is saved? Answer: The German people.”

"This is a memoir account by the author of spending the years of WW2 with his parents in Berlin. The title refers to a common greeting among people during the ordeal in Berlin about the need for everyone to focus on staying alive. The book is well wri"

| This was a fascinating history of life in Berlin during World War II. I found it pretty gripping and hard to put down. The author uses mostly first-person accounts and interviews, as well as his personal family history, to assemble his narrative, so ...more | |

"Definitely a super fun read but I found myself wishing the plot went in several different directions at various points. The tech problems seemed a little too easily solved, the ending was a tad cliche, etc. But definitely a page turner. I'm looking f"

| I saw the movie before reading the book, and it's one of those rare cases where it's hard to say which I enjoyed more, because both were fantastic. The movie maybe had more hilarious scenes, and the book had more fun science and math digressions. Wou ...more | |

| A funny novel by a Canadian author about the aftermath of twentysomething young woman's marriage dissolving. This book was definitely a journey. It started off with me thinking it was going to be about the narrator's nice, quirky group of friends sup ...more | |
“Maybe I’m strange and perverse, but I’ve always thought there was something sexy about a compelling argument.”

“I want to see the world without explaining away its mystery by calling things wicked, righteous, sinful, and good. I want to erase in myself the easy explanations, the always mendacious explanations about why things happen the way they do, and in this way, come to know the mystery of being–-not by any approximation in thought, but by being. I want to be and not be ashamed of being.”

“Leaving your religion and having to invent your own system of values is a big deal, after all.”

“As soon as coffee is in your stomach, there is a general commotion. Ideas begin to move…similes arise, the paper is covered. Coffee is your ally and writing ceases to be a struggle.”

“And if someone felt that his life had been an utter failure, and that he himself was only one among millions of wholly unimportant people who could be replaced as easily as broken windowpanes, he would go and pour out his heart to Momo. And, even as he spoke, he would come to realize by some mysterious means that he was absolutely wrong: that there was only one person like himself in the whole world, and that, consequently, he mattered to the world in his own particular way.
Such was Momo's talent for listening.”

“No sex?" He looked at me in disbelief. "Well if you can't have ze sex, what can you do?"
For the sake of simplicity I took my left arm and lined it up just under my collarbones. "Nothing below here," I said. I took my right arm and lined it up to my knees. "Nothing above here."
"What about your armpit?" he asked. "Can your boyfriend do anything he wants to your armpit?"
I thought about it. Armpits seemed pretty harmless. "Yeah," I said optimistically. "My boyfriend can do anything he wants to my armpit."
"This is good," the Frenchman said. "He can stick his penis in and out of your armpit, and if you grow hair there it is almost like vagine."
Is it too late to change my answer? I wondered, pulling a cardigan over my bare shoulders and covering any hint of an invitation.”
