Praise for Rising:
“Gale Massey’s insight and empathy resonate throughout this beautifully written debut collection. She has just the right words to make us feel the pain and hardships affecting her characters, but always with hope. This a must-read from a wonderful new writer. I can’t wait to see what she does next.” –Alafair Burke, New York Times-bestselling author of The Better Sister

My advice is to study any book that moves you this much. Take it apart. Understand its structure. Read academic critiques that reveal the magic behind the curtain. Apply all this to your own novel idea and write an outline that includes plot points at the end of act one, two and three. Keep your cards close to your chest and get through that first draft. Then you'll have something no one else has, specifically an idea with legs to go the distance. (less)

Completely relatable and beautifully written this book is like no other I’ve encountered. Deeply layered and textured-it’s a story about love finding its true place in the world. I give it all the stars.

No, haven't started Home yet. I'm finishing 'Out Stealing Horses' by Per Petterson. Excellent book. Need to finish it by Tuesday. Also need to finish three pieces of writing by Tuesday. Then I can start Home.
Are you free the week of the 21st? Thursday evening, 5/24?

Gale I discovered Capote's writing recently so we probably haven't discussed him. Yes, he's wonderful. Started to read Home, don't know if I can handle the graphic nature of it. Have you started it yet?

Derry Smith I had no idea you were a big Truman Capote fan. Am I having a memory lapse? Have we discussed him? Christmas Memory is one of my all time favorites. That's so cool, that we have that in common!
