First short story of 2022 - Boardwalk Oracle

The Willesden Herald published this slightly magical tale in January. Boardwalk Oracle begins like this:

The faded pictures on the vending machine showed a variety of cupcakes with and without a cherry on top, with and without chocolate chips. It didn’t mean anything. Orlando knew that the images had nothing to do with the product that would be delivered. It was a game and it was very old. Read

“He shuffled to the door and didn’t look back. In his memory she would remain there forever, in her scarlet robe, surrounded by the dusty feathers of dead birds.”
M.E. Proctor, Elymore: The Savage Crown Series Book 1

“The stains of violence were forever captured in the grout between the gray tiles.”
M.E. Proctor, Love You Till Tuesday

“The Doc had been with Security longer than anybody could remember. He had an encyclopedic memory — it came with his programming — and a frightful temper.
“You saw the summary,” he said. “You’re lucky I’m an android and I don’t need sleep, or the work would never get done with the ridiculous staffing policy of this Department.”
“What’s the use of androids if they complain like humans!” Hutton said.”
M.E. Proctor, Sands of Kelian

M.E. Proctor, Elymore: The Savage Crown Series Book 1

“Benson had already forgotten the samples he had analyzed when an unfortunate explosion of the air purification system burned him beyond recognition. The investigation concluded that it was an accident. The purification system was antiquated; colonists had complained about it for the last twenty years and credits had consistently been refused. It was a sad event. It was forgotten in a week. A new air purification system was installed.”
M.E. Proctor, Solitaire Plaza
