The audiobook was especially enjoyable since the format fit the story so well, making it easy to imagine following along with a real investigative podcast.

The mystery itself kept me guessing for most of the book. I enjoyed trying to piece everything together alongside the characters, and there were enough twists to keep me invested. The pacing was solid for the majority of the novel, and I found myself wanting to keep listening to see what would happen next.

Every time I thought I had reached a good stopping point, I needed to know what happened next.

What stood out to me most was the incredible portrayal of the women. Their resilience, loyalty, and determination were inspiring. They lived in a time when the status quo demanded silence and obedience, yet they found ways, both big and small, to push back against injustice. Their courage wasn't always loud or dramatic, which made it feel even more authentic. It was found in everyday choices, unwavering friendships, and the willingness to stand up for what was right despite the risks.

The camaraderie between the women was one of my favorite parts of the story. They supported one another through impossible circumstances, proving that friendship can be a powerful force for change. Their relationships felt genuine, and I found myself deeply invested in each of their journeys. I laughed with them, worried for them, and celebrated every victory along the way.

I especially enjoyed watching the relationships develop as the story unfolded. Beyond the mystery itself, the novel explores themes of found family, loyalty, motherhood, and the complicated choices people make to protect the ones they love. Those emotional elements gave the story more depth than a typical thriller.

The pacing is steady, and Feeney does a great job of revealing information at just the right moments to keep the pages turning. I found myself constantly trying to figure out how everyone was connected, and that puzzle aspect was one of my favorite parts of the reading experience. That said, this wasn't my favorite Alice Feeney novel. One of my favorite parts was the character banter. The dialogue felt natural, playful, and full of chemistry, making it easy to become invested in the relationships. I don't mind dark or disturbing books when the violence serves a purpose or adds depth to the story, but here it often felt like shock value for the sake of shock value. Instead of building suspense, it left me feeling uncomfortable and disconnected from what was happening.

The characters didn't help either. I never felt invested in any of them because they were so underdeveloped. Their decisions often didn't make sense, and I struggled to connect with anyone emotionally. When major twists and reveals happened, I found myself feeling indifferent because I simply didn't care enough about the people involved.

The plot also became more unbelievable the further it went. I can suspend disbelief for a thriller, but this story pushed it too far. There were so many convenient moments and over-the-top developments that it pulled me right out of the experience. Rather than feeling tense or excited, I kept rolling my eyes and questioning how any of it was supposed to be believable.

I know Jennifer Hillier has a lot of fans, and I've seen so many people rave about her books, which is why I was excited to pick this one up. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me. Maybe her newer books are stronger, but *The Butcher* definitely missed the mark in my opinion.

I really wanted to like *Sometimes I Lie* because the premise immediately hooked me. An unreliable narrator, a woman trapped in a coma who can hear everything happening around her, and the mystery of how she ended up there? It sounded like exactly the kind of psychological thriller I enjoy.

Unfortunately, this one ended up trying to do way too much.

The biggest issue for me was the endless twists. I don't mind a surprising ending—in fact, I love when a thriller catches me completely off guard. But there comes a point where adding twist after twist starts to take away from the story instead of enhancing it. Every time I thought we were getting somewhere, another reveal would send everything in a different direction. Instead of feeling shocked, I just felt exhausted.

I think the original premise was strong enough to carry the novel on its own. There was plenty of tension built into Amber's situation, and I would have preferred a tighter, more focused story that leaned into that. Instead, the plot became increasingly complicated, and by the end it felt like the twists existed simply because the book needed one more surprise.

The pacing kept me turning the pages, and I can definitely see why this book has such a strong following. Alice Feeney's writing is engaging, and she does a good job creating an atmosphere where you never quite know who to trust. Even when I was rolling my eyes at some of the reveals, I still wanted to know how everything would end.

That said, the ending didn't completely work for me. It felt more interested in being shocking than satisfying, and I was left wishing the story had trusted its central idea instead of piling on so many extra layers.

Overall, I don't think this was a bad book—it just wasn't the thriller I was hoping for. If you're someone who loves books with constant plot twists and endings that leave your jaw on the floor, you might have a much better experience than I did. For me, though, less would have been more.

By the end of the novel, I found myself hoping that when I'm in my 80s, I'm even half as bold, independent, and spirited as Mabel.

Mabel is the kind of character who stays with you long after you've finished the book. She refuses to let her age define her and faces life's challenges with determination, wit, and courage. Even when people underestimate her, she continues to stand up for herself and those she cares about. I loved her resilience and her refusal to give up, and I found her both inspiring and incredibly entertaining.

One of the strongest themes in the novel is the lasting impact that cruel families and bullying can have on people's lives. Hepworth shows that emotional wounds don't simply disappear with time and that the way people are treated by those closest to them can shape their confidence, relationships, and sense of self for years.
