I really wanted to like *She Didn’t See It Coming* by Sherri La Peña because the premise sounded like exactly the kind of thriller I usually enjoy. The setup had a lot of potential, and at first I thought it was going to deliver a tense, twisty story. Unfortunately, it ended up being a pretty disappointing read for me overall.

My biggest issue was the characters. I never felt connected to any of them, and most of them came across as flat or underdeveloped. Their decisions often felt unrealistic or frustrating instead of adding tension to the story. In thrillers, I don’t necessarily need to like every character, but I do need to care about what happens to them, and I just didn’t here. Because of that, a lot of the emotional moments and suspense didn’t really land.

The plot itself also felt very average. There were moments where the story hinted at something more exciting or unpredictable, but it never fully committed to those ideas. A lot of the twists felt either too obvious or not impactful enough to leave a lasting impression. I kept waiting for the book to pick up or surprise me, especially as it got closer to the ending, but it stayed pretty predictable throughout.

The pacing wasn’t terrible, and I was able to finish the book fairly quickly, which is probably one of the few positives for me. The writing style was easy to get through, and the concept definitely had potential. I can see why the synopsis would grab people’s attention. I just think the execution didn’t match the idea.

The ending was probably the most disappointing part for me. After spending the whole book hoping for a shocking or satisfying payoff, the conclusion felt weak and underwhelming. It didn’t leave me surprised or thinking about the story afterward, which is usually what I want from a thriller.

Overall, this book just didn’t deliver what I was hoping for. It had an interesting premise but lacked strong characters, compelling twists, and a memorable ending. Hazelwood has a way of writing stories that are both entertaining and emotionally compelling, and *Mate* was no exception.

One of my favorite things about this book was the world-building and overall plot. The story felt immersive without becoming overwhelming, and the pacing kept me hooked the entire time. There was always something happening, whether it was tension between characters, emotional moments, or plot twists that made me desperate to keep reading. I also loved how naturally the romance developed throughout the story. The chemistry between the characters was intense, but it never felt rushed or forced. Their relationship had emotional depth, vulnerability, and genuine connection, which made me even more invested in them.

The found family aspect was another reason I loved this book so much. The side characters added warmth, humor, and emotional support to the story, making the world feel richer and more alive. I loved seeing the friendships and loyalty between the characters because it gave the story an extra layer of heart beyond the romance itself. Those relationships made the emotional moments hit even harder and gave the story a comforting feeling despite all the tension and drama.

Sometimes romance novels can lean too heavily on tropes or overly idealized characters, but this one gave the main characters enough emotional baggage and personal struggles that they felt grounded and real. Janelle Brown does an incredible job showing how children can grow up carrying the consequences of their parents’ choices, even when those choices are made under the guise of love or protection. The mix of absurd humor, high-stakes action, weird monsters, and emotional character moments makes the series incredibly addictive to read.

One of my favorite things about this installment was seeing the characters really start to come into their own. In the first book, a lot of the focus was naturally on surviving the initial shock of the dungeon and understanding the rules of this insane new reality. Here, the characters feel more confident, more developed, and more aware of the roles they play within the larger system. Carl especially continues to grow in a way that makes him easy to root for, balancing sarcasm, determination, and genuine care for the people around him. And honestly, Donut continues to steal every scene she’s in.

I also appreciated that the overall concept and purpose behind the dungeon became much clearer in this book. There’s still plenty of mystery, but the story starts revealing more about how this entire system works and why it exists, which made me even more invested in the series as a whole. The deeper worldbuilding added weight to all the ridiculousness happening on the surface.

Despite how over-the-top everything is, the pacing stays incredibly sharp. There’s always something happening, whether it’s a fight, a hilarious interaction, or a shocking reveal. Even when things got completely absurd, the emotional core of the story kept it grounded enough that I stayed fully invested.

I definitely did not expect a vampire and werewolf love story to have me this completely hooked, but Bride surprised me in the best way possible. I went into this book thinking it would just be a fun paranormal romance, and while it absolutely delivered on the romance, it also gave me so much more than I expected. Allie Hazelwood managed to create a world that felt immersive without being overwhelming, and the story pulled me in almost immediately.

One of my favorite things about this book was how quickly I became attached to the characters. Misery was such a fun main character to follow because she balanced sarcasm, intelligence, and vulnerability so well. I loved her inner monologue and the way she approached situations with humor, even when things around her were complicated. Lowe was equally compelling. He had that classic protective werewolf energy, but there was also a softness to him that made the romance feel believable and emotional instead of overly dramatic.

The chemistry between the vampire and werewolf leads was honestly one of the strongest parts of the book. Their relationship developed at a pace that kept me invested the entire time, and I found myself rooting for them almost immediately. The tension, banter, and emotional moments all worked really well together. Even during quieter scenes, the connection between them felt genuine.

I also appreciated how fast-paced the story was. One of the things I liked most was the theme of resilience. Lady Tremaine is often seen as the villain in Cinderella, but this story gave her more depth and showed her struggles, pain, and the reasons behind her choices. It made her feel like a real person instead of just an evil stepmother. Seeing how she handled loss, disappointment, and the pressure of survival made her character much more interesting.

I also appreciated the strong theme of female empowerment. The women in the story were not perfect, but they were strong in different ways. Even when there was conflict, there was still a sense of understanding and shared experience that made the relationships feel realistic.

One of my favorite parts was the ending. I actually liked that it was not a typical fairytale ending where everything becomes perfect. Instead, it felt more honest and believable. Life is often messy, and not every story ends with complete happiness. That made the book feel more meaningful to me because it reflected real life instead of fantasy.

Overall, Lady Tremaine was a great surprise for me. It made me think differently about a character I thought I already knew and showed me that stories can be more powerful when they challenge the original version. Even though this is not my usual genre, I found it engaging, emotional, and memorable.
