Hansel and Gretel, the chicken version
I just read the most hilarious book in existence, and y’all HAVE to hear about it! Jordan Elise Durbin’s The Chicken Pox is a delightful fairy tale retelling that will have you bent over double with laughter.
Book blurbOnce, chickens were monotone.
Then, came the pox.
A washed-up bar maid-hen, a twisted and wicked step-chicken, and a mischievous pair of chicks swirl through a medieval world of chickenry in this charming retelling of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Blanche is a middle-aged tavern owner running out of hope that Prince Charming might walk through her door. When a wealthy guest is stricken with a mysterious illness, Blanche’s livelihood is destroyed. But she wasn’t hatched yesterday and seizes an opportunity for the domestic life she’s always dreamed of. Unfortunately, it comes with a pair of chicks that are far more demanding than Blanche had ever dreamed.
Henrietta and Grittel are determined to brighten Blanche’s dull world. But when they follow their step-chicken to a tasty cabin deep in the woods, the chicks discover secrets darker than any they could imagine.
Admirers of folk-lore, poultry, and fairy tales will adore this hilarious twist on the classic children’s story.
My reviewI never knew I needed a fairy tale retelling told by chickens until I read this book!
In The Chicken Pox, Jordan weaves a delightful story with some of the cleverest character development I’ve ever read. The book had me in stitches with laughter more times than I can count. I think Blanche was the most interesting character, and I LOVED seeing how she changed throughout the story and how Jordan kept Blanche’s changes realistic to the story.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.

related postsHow to read ebooks for free (without resorting to piracy)
Let’s be honest, books are expensive. I’ve heard this as an excuse for why readers need to pirate books, but pirates are only attractive in fiction, not when they’re stealing fiction. And authors work hard enough, you do not need to be stealing their work! (Says the newbie author who’s been figuring out exactly how hard the whole process is.)
But what if I told you you could read ebooks for FREE without resorting to piracy? My Kindle is stuffed with books, and I’ve only spent my own money on an ebook once (and that was an emergency XD).
Criminally underrated Prime featureFirst of all, get a trial of Amazon Prime or Prime Young Adult. (If you can do Prime Student, go for it because it’s half the price if you don’t cancel the subscription).
When you have Prime, you get faster shipping from Amazon. But there’s also an option to get your orders shipped slightly less quickly (like a day or two later) as part of their like climate initiative stuff, and get money to use toward online Amazon purchases! When you go to check out, you will see options for when your items can be shipped, and all you have to do is click the option for Amazon Day Delivery to get the rewards. These rewards can then be used to buy books!!!!
Amazon offers a free trial of up to six months of Prime and Prime Young Adult, and once your trial has finished, it is pretty easy to cancel your membership if you don’t want to pay for it!
Prime young adultAmazon primeKindle RewardsDid you know that Amazon can give you reward points when you buy books from them? Once you have 300 points, you can redeem it for $3 to go toward an ebook! Amazon also counts using your Amazon Delivery Day rewards towards your Kindle rewards, so that’ll get you free books even faster!
Kindle rewardsKindle Unlimited TrialThis one I feel like is the most well-known, but I’ll share it anyway. You can try a free trial of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited! In Kindle Unlimited you can borrow ebooks like from a library (except with zero wait times!). Once your trial has ended, you can cancel your membership. I know I’ve done the trial of KU, and then when I have a less busy month, I’ve restarted my membership just for that month.
Kindle unlimitedSales and author newslettersMy final tip: if you don’t like the price of an ebook, wait and follow the author’s newsletter and social media in the meantime (especially if the author is an indie author).
Authors put their books (ebooks especially) on sale fairly frequently. If you don’t like the price of an author’s ebook, wait. Authors will announce when their books go on sale, and when they do, take advantage of the sales! Lots of my favorite authors will put their books on sale for 99¢ (or even free) on Amazon!
Coupled with the other strategies, you will maximize how many ebooks you can acquire legally without paying a dime!
What did I miss? Are there any other ways you know of (legally) to save money on ebooks? Let me know in the comments! This post contains affiliate links. From warring authors to allied collaborators…
A little while ago, I made a post about a certain competition I had with a friend over preorders for anthologies we were both participating in. (Go back and read it real quick if you need a refresher).
Anyway, there has been a… development on the battlefield.
The anthology I was slated to be a part of was dissolved due to unforeseen circumstances, and the publisher decided to place my anthology in a different anthology.
Three guesses as to which anthology that was…
Three…
Two…
One…
Did you guess it?
Yup, my story was placed in the anthology with the author I’d had an all out preorder war with, so I suppose the warring authors are now joining forces as we set out to capture more preorders for the anthology I will be joining, WAKING COURAGE.
Waking Courage is an anthology of fairy tale retellings from Madisyn Carlin, Courtney Ranger (yours truly), and Samantha Seidel. I am working on getting my author profiles to reflect the change, so y’all are the first to hear about it from me!
So… if you’d be willing, help Madisyn AND I, along with Samantha fulfill our quest of seeking out readers for our anthology. We cannot do it without your help, so add our anthology to your TBR, share about it on social media, and even — if you feel so inclined — preorder the anthology on Amazon.
Sending hugs,
Courtney Ranger

related postsAuthor Interview: H.S. Kylian
My friend, H.S. Kylian just released a new book, Sunflowers Under the Harvest Moon. To celebrate her new release, I had the opportunity to interview her about her writing and her book!
Hi, Hannah! Thank you so much for joining us! Can you introduce yourself to my readers?
Of course! *clears throat* Hello, folks! I’m H.S. Kylian, otherwise known as Hannah. I’m from the PNW, born and raised, and am the oldest of eight. I also have two adorable nephews! I’ve been writing since I was a child, and am more often than not imagining my stories instead of writing them…
You just released a brand new book, Sunflowers Under the Harvest Moon. Congratulations! Can you tell me what inspired this story?
Ah…well…let’s go back in time to 2018. I was going down the unsolved mysteries rabbit hole as you do, and came across an urban legend from Switzerland known as Le Loyon. Well, initially, the idea that sprung from that entailed a widow with a young daughter coming to Marigold Hills for vacation and stepping into a mystery. It would’ve also included her falling in love with Jonathan, who has pretty much stayed the same, albeit with a few changes here and there. Then as the years passed, it morphed into this.
From the title, this story seems to have a very autumny feel. Is that what readers can expect? Do you have any cute fall scenes from this story you could tell us about?
In the last third of the book, yes. The story begins in spring and ends in the fall, with a wintery epilogue. However, the title mainly refers to a certain scene that’s actually in the late summer. As far as cute fall scenes go…I’m not sure I should spoil it.
Were any characters in this book based on anyone you know? If so, can you share a little about that?
Hmm…to be honest, I’ve always thought I put a little bit of my parents into the couples I write, since they were my first example of what a Godly marriage should look like. Although right now the one thing I keep thinking of is my dad always kissing my mom when coming home from work, always calling her beautiful…
How did this story pose different challenges to write than previous books you’ve written?
Well, considering this is my first full length novel, and I’ve been writing Jonathan & Nicki over and over again for the past seven years, which includes having already published two short stories about them, it was only really a challenge to finish it. It just kept growing!
What did you learn from writing this book?
I suppose the usual that any writer learns: just keep writing even if it’s cringe at the moment; you can fix it later. Or even as you go if it works for you that way. Either way, diligence pays off in the end.
Why should my readers take the time to read this book?
Well, if you like sweet romance with a Biblical worldview and themes of hope and healing in the continuing navigation of loss, you might like Sunflowers Under The Harvest Moon.
Do I need to read any of your other works before I read this book, or can it be read by itself?
Since it’s part of a series that’s in progress, it does kind of need to be read after Handprints and For Better or For Worse, but at the same time it can be read without them since those are about Jonathan’s parents.
Where can I find this book to purchase?
Amazon. It’s available in eBook, paperback, and thru KU.
When can we expect more books from you?
Wellll…I have another Jonathan & Nicki short story coming out in December called Together With You, but as far as novels go, I’m not sure. I want the next one to be about Jonathan’s parents but we’ll see.
Thank you so much for joining us!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks so much for having me!

When an epidemic hits their small town at Christmastime, can a schoolteacher with a grudge and a doctor with a secret still share the light of the season with those without hope?

Click here to get your copy!My reviewI LOVE Christmas stories, and I knew when I picked up an anthology by these three POWERHOUSES of authors, I was in for a treat!!!!!!! (I was not wrong!)
Tracie Peterson’s books have always been close to my heart since she was one of the authors who introduced me to the wonderful world of Christian historical fiction. Reading her story felt like coming home. Her novella is a marriage of convenience story, and I LOVE those!!!!! I love how she showed the couple coming together, and I especially loved how she showed Angel convincing the children to give her a chance. And let me just say after reading Tracie’s story, I am ready to devour more of her books (and return to old favorites!).
I don’t believe I’ve read too many of Misty’s books, but I’ve heard wonderful things about her. And her story was so cute and cozy. I loved the dual love story and how the characters relationships felt so believable!
And then there’s Karen’s story. Karen’s books have gotten me through a lot, so I had high hopes and expectations of her story. Like always, she exceeded my wildest expectations. I LOVE how she threw in little easter eggs of the Christmas story throughout! I loved how she wrote the complexities of Frank and Stella’s relationship and helped the reader understand their struggles. And there was a baby. Need I say more?
Overall, or I guess not overall, this book WAS PERFECTION. If you need a cozy collection of Christmas stories to get you through the long month until the Christmas season, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!
Content notes: it is implied that a married couple have an intimate scene (nothing shown), characters end up in a brothel and the prostitutes make comments about their profession

My review*looks up from my mug of peppermint-infused hot cocoa*
Well, the mug of hot cocoa isn’t exactly real (hot cocoa makes me sick), but if you want the book that is the exact same Christmassy feel as a delicious mug of hot cocoa with loads of peppermint and marshmallows, this book is for you. It has all the gooey Christmassy wonderfulness you could EVER WANT!!!!!!!!
Belle loves her dog. And lonely as she is, she refuses to lose her new piece of family. I love Belle’s bravery and how she still knows when she needs to accept help. She felt rather relatable and was an overall wonderful protagonist.
Parker was such an incredible love interest!!!!! He is sweet, thoughtful, protective, and just altogether perfect. I loved him!!!!!
This is the second installment in this series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone (although I ABSOLUTELY plan on hunting down the first book!).
The only complaint about this book is that the dog was referred to as Belle’s “furbaby” a few times. True, I’ve never had a pet, but it bothers me when people refer to pets as their furbabies.
Overall, this book was just the perfect contemporary Christmas novel!!!!!!!!! If you love Christmas, read this book!!!!!!!!! It’s INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.

Book Review + Giveaway: Christmas Mail-Order Brides Anthology from Wild Heart Books
One thing I’ll say for this book. It gave me the… opportunity to attempt to explain the concept of a Mail-Order Bride to a friend of mine. I did not realize that it wasn’t common knowledge that Mail-Order Brides were a thing. Clearly, more people need to read Mail-Order Bride romances…
About the BookBook: Christmas Mail Order Brides, Anthology
Authors: Vickie McDonough, Carrie Turansky, Susan Page Davis
Genre: Christian Historical Romance
Release Date: September 9, 2025
Marriage arrives by mail-order—just in time for Christmas.
Ride the transcontinental railroad as three mail-order brides head west in search of new futures. Annika arrives in Wyoming to discover her intended groom is missing. Jolie’s journey to Nevada is derailed by disaster, and Amelia travels to California to wrap up her final attempts at matchmaking. Will the holiday season be the ticket to spark love in unexpected ways?
Click here to get your copy!My reviewThis trio of Christmas romances were enchanting and kept me invested in seeing what happened to the characters!!! The stories in this anthology were quick enough to read that reading the whole anthology felt like a breeze.
Carrie Turansky wrote the first story in the anthology. I loved seeing how hard Annika worked to prove her worth, and I loved how her love interest recognizes her worth right from the beginning. I love how he fights for her to receive the honor and respect she deserves.
Vickie’s story probably was my favorite of the three! I loved seeing how Jolie and her man learned to rely on each other. I also enjoyed seeing how Jolie convinced others to recognize that her husband had become a good man worthy of respect. The story was fast-paced and exciting, and I wish I could’ve stayed with the characters a little longer!
Susan’s story about Amelia was a fascinating wrap-up to the set. Amelia’s determination to keep her clients happy was beautiful. I loved seeing how she had strong convictions and held those she trusts to a high standard. Later-in-life romances aren’t usually my favorite, but I still enjoyed this story!
Overall, this anthology was the PERFECT thing to get me in the mood for more Christmas stories!!!!!!!! If you enjoy easy-to-read Christian romances you will FALL in LOVE with and characters who will make you want to be better, READ THIS BOOK!

More from CarrieBringing a Swedish Christmas to the American West By Carrie TuranskyIn my novella, A Trusting Heart, part of the Christmas Mail-Order Brides Collection, Annika Bergstrom, who is originally from Sweden, leaves her home in Chicago and travels to the rugged Wyoming Territory in 1880 to marry a man she’s never met. Though she carries only a small trunk, she brings with her something far more meaningful—cherished Christmas traditions from her homeland.
Swedish Christmas celebrations begin early with the first Sunday of Advent. Annika remembers her mother lighting a candle each week leading up to Christmas, filling their home with warmth and anticipation. In her new Wyoming home, she lights a candle, longing for connection and clinging to faith and hope as she begins this new chapter of life.
December 13 brings one of the most beloved Swedish traditions—St. Lucia Day. In Sweden, the youngest daughter dresses in a white gown with a red sash and wears a crown of candles, waking her family with coffee and saffron buns. Annika lovingly bakes these sweet rolls with her intended’s daughter, hoping it will draw them all closer.
As Christmas Eve—Julafton—arrives, Annika prepares a modest version of a Swedish smörgåsbord: roasted ham, root vegetables, and creamy rice pudding. She hides an almond in the pudding, smiling as everyone at the table eagerly searches their bowls. According to Swedish tradition, the one who finds the almond will marry in the coming year. Laughter and joy fill the room, and Annika feels a growing sense of belonging with her new family.
Swedish traditions add depth and richness to A Trusting Heart, reminding us that wherever we go, the light of Christmas can shine brightly—especially when carried by a trusting heart.
We hope you’ll enjoy reading Christmas Mail-Order Brides which includes three novellas: The Prodigal Groom by Vickie McDonough, A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky, and Mrs. Mayberry Meets Her Match by Susan Page Davis. Each heartwarming story that will transport you back to a joyful, old-fashioned Christmas.
