Alan P. Woodruff writes action-adventure thrillers and legal mysteries where he is an acclaimed master of the courtroom drama.

Alan’s stories draw on a wealth of personal and professional experience. He has worked as a chemical engineer designing large chemical plants; a financial planner, investment syndicator and owner of a brokerage firm; a consultant and policy analyst for dozens of state and federal agencies (including the Atomic Energy Commission, Department of Justice, Department of Education, and the National Institutes of Health) and international organizations (including the World Bank). He has also served as a contractor to the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency where he held the highest security clearances.

However, even though I plot my first draft, I always find additional things that will add to my story. So, I am actually a hybrid writer.

My professional experiences inform the content of scenes, but does not generally 'inspire' my stories. The one exception in Kaleidoscope, my first novel, which was largely based on one of my cases where I represented the COE of a Hospital who was fired and charged with embezzlement.

While constructing my stories are still an important part of my writing, I’m now putting at least an equal amount of work into my writing: Developing characters my readers will come to know; Constructing scenes that will make readers 'experience; and Writing dialog that readers will 'hear' and feel that they are present. My efforts in this direction are probably most evident in The Spider's Web, the last book in the Lucius White series, and Who Killed Joe Lamb? the first book of the TJ Hawke series. If you've read either of these books, I'd love to hear your thoughts on my efforts.

Thank you for asking your question and for reading my novels.
