However, I try to tackle at least one difficult literature tome a year. For instance, last year's book was Ulysses, and the year before was Gravity's Rainbow. Since I have been eyeing the four Faulkner books on my bookshelf for a while, I probably will read one soon. Okay, even though Faulkner isn't necessarily difficult to read, I will choose one as my official summer reading this year.(less)

In my opinion, we earthlings have significantly undervalued the originality and quirkiness of their poems. At least theirs are far better than mine.(less)

"So Many Stories

This was an interesting read for me as my mother-in-law grew up in Shanghai and experienced the Japanese invasion. It helped me to understand what she went through. This was a fascinating window into Chinese culture. " Read more of this review »

Two thumbs up! I plan to reread it in a month or so to see if the magic is still there.

Tommy Orange is one of my favorite contemporary writers. I was impressed by his debut There, There. This book is even better: it reminds me of the type of Bordeau

“Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books.”

“Why were we expected to speak English perfectly while praising Americans for even the clumsiest dribble of Chinese?”

Qian Julie Wang
“I put these stories to paper for this country's forgotten children, past and present, who grow up cloaked in fear, desolation, and the belief that their very existence is wrong, their very being illegal. I have been unfathomably lucky. But I dream of a day when being recognized as human requires no luck -- when it is a right, not a privilege. And I dream of a day when each and every one of us will have no reason to fear stepping out of the shadows.”
Qian Julie Wang, Beautiful Country

Min Jin Lee
“There was consolation: The people you loved, they were always there with you, she had learned. Sometimes, she could be in front of a train kiosk or the window of a bookstore, and she could feel Noa's small hand when he was a boy, and she would close her eyes and think of his sweet grassy smell and remember that he had always tried his best. At those moments, it was good to be alone to hold on to him.”
Min Jin Lee, Pachinko
