The Power of the Muse

I’m Celia Smith, of Toronto. You may not have met me before, but you’ll find my story in The Drawing Lesson, the first in The Trilogy of Remembrance. You can even see me in a very short video arguing with Mother. There is much scandal in these stories but also much truth.

What kind of truth? Hopefully, a healing one. It’s about how a muse can affect not just your art, but every aspect of your entire life for better or for worse. It’s not just about finding inspiration for creating “things”.It’...

The Muse

Daphne Bersault is Alexander Wainwright’s muse and lover in the novel,The Drawing Lesson and Night Crossing, in The Trilogy of Remembrance. After meeting Alex by chance on the Orient Express to Venice and spending time with him in that city, she returned home to New York. For only one night, they had become lovers. Unable to answer the many questions rising up within her, she fought off a sense of disappointment. She didn’t know where she stood–something she disliked intensely. But, sh...

Creativity and the Internet Guru

Are you like me? Lost at sea on the internet?
Since I’m always looking for advice, I make an appointment with my internet GURU high up in the mountains—of course.

A long climb!

After an arduous two day climb, I arrive—panting—at his door. We writers are notoriously rather out of shape. We prefer the comfort of a keyboard and a glass of wine!

This GURU looks rather austere. No levity with him! But I have come a long way and am determined to ask my question.

My Appointment with Dr. Jung

The next day, with some trepidation, I approached the Burgholzli Clinic where Dr. Carl Jung practised, taking care of patients we now classify as schizophrenic. See Jung on Great LIterature

The Burgholzli Clinic

I am in the waiting room of Dr. Jung’s clinic. I’m shown in to see the great man. Now I’m worried he will consider my question frivolous–to say the least–when he has such seriously ill patients to consider. But when I first meet him in the inner-sanctum, which is rather grand, I begin t...

Jung on Great Literature

creativity, muse, unconscius,

A voyage into the unconscious.

A writer? A critic or reviewer? A reader?

Whom should we ask about the nature of great literature? How about a psychiatrist— ones as famous as Carl Jung or Sigmund Freud?

Creativity, muse Jung, Freud. Joseph Campbell, novels, literary, art, mythology, psychology

Dr. Carl Jung

What does Dr. Jung have to say on the topic? “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner play, necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.

Without this fantasy play, no creative work has ever yet come...

Joseph Campbell, James Joyce and Art

Still thinking about what makes great literature? [#2]

I have— and here’s what I’ve come up with.

Joseph Campbell, mythologist, lecturer and thinker is one of my favourite writers. He dedicated his career to the study of myth—story which comes from deep within human beings. Frequently I’ve turned to his work in studying what makes for great writing and more importantly–great story-telling. And his work really exploreswhywe tell such tales.
