I am a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of science fiction and fantasy novels. I like my characters strong and wounded, and my adventures thrilling and dark.

I'm a voracious reader in many genres. I do sometimes judge a book by its cover art. Life is too short to spend time reading or reviewing bad books so you'll see my library, ratings, and reviews represent books I believe are worth sharing.

I live in Northern California with my husband, two dogs, a garden, lots of chickens, a viola, and a bicycle. My anthropology degree shapes my fiction. I write dark adventures (science fiction, fantasy, post-apocalyptic, coming-of-age) with a hint of romance. Follow me

In a way, all my books so far are anthropology-based. I don't think I can help it. That part of my brain doesn't turn off anymore :)

When I wrote my coming-of-age adventure novel (Rhinoceros Summer), I did a ton of ethnographic research on trophy hunting and the intersection of native culture with tourism culture in East Africa.

In my current post-apocalyptic series, Feast of Weeds, I ended up doing a lot of ethnographic research on street kids alongside all the science research on disease.

I love reading stories that take a different perspective on a situation. Just because popular culture stereotypes people and situations a certain way doesn't mean it will actually happen that way. I get to use my imagination to make up an alternative, but I definitely think my anthropology background informs that alternative at every step.

So... I would say go for it! Whatever story you have in mind, it can only be made better by slipping in some anthropology too.(less)

I took a short break from gardening…

…the garden did not take a break from me.

The grapevine is a magnificent tangle, and the morning glories are practically wallpapering the fence. My cherry tomatoes are on the cusp of ripeness, and my kaffir lime tree is absolutely bursting with fruit, the raspberry bush is a sweet, relentless producer, and I’m consistently behind on harvesting.

I confess, the heat
