“I heard Lily laughing in the bathroom—bright, carefree, the kind of laugh that twists your gut with hope. I smiled, thinking maybe today was normal.
But the sound was off. Hollow. Not the laugh of a four-year-old brushing her teeth.
I found her at the sink, toothbrush moving carefully over gums that were bare. My breath caught.
I looked down at the glass beside her—a cloudy, milky mess of teeth. Every one of them, floating like little ghosts.
She grinned, all gums and no shame. “Almost done, Mummy.”
I wanted to scream. But instead, I said, “Don’t forget the back ones.”
Because what else do you say when your daughter is brushing teeth she no longer has?”
