Falling Man by Don DeLillo
href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/89..." style="float: left; padding-right: 20px">
Novels by Don Delillo: Point Omega, Underworld, Cosmopolis, Mao Ii, Falling Man, Libra, White Noise, the Names, the Body Artist, Players by Books LLC
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I just finished "Falling Man" and found it to be true to all Don DeLillo's writing, i.e. disturbing and compelling. You either engage with DeLillo or you don't. Ever since "White Noise" all those years ago, I have engaged. This is not a lightweight book. It is hardly a beach read, although I did spend most of a Sunday morning in my bathing suit sweating on my deck drinking ice water and ice coffee reading it. It is a 9-11 story, plain and simply. That said, there is something extraordinary simple about the way DeLillo strings his sentences together. And that is deceptive.

Very excited reading about Edna O'Brien's new memoir, "Country Girl, today in the NYTimes. Love Edna O'Brien. Her beautiful writing and her literary themes mesmerized me growing up and continue to captivate me. Plus I love knowing in her glorious youth she was so gorgeous and such a siren. The company she kept...rock stars, literary lions, stars of stage and screen...what a life she's led.

The only thing better than winning some prize or receiving some accolade from your own work is when someone you know well and respect so much as a writer wins a big prize themselves. Last week I was delighted to learn that my old friend Gilbert King won a Pulitzer for his nonfiction book, "Devil in the Grove." Gil is an amazing researcher and I know he went far beyond the call of duty to amass the material for his book including many out of pocket expenses for travel for interviews he could otherwise never get. I am so proud to know him and so glad for his success. It's not every day someone you know wins a Pulitzer. Bravo, Gilbert King. I feel so much better when I have been able to write creatively if only a few hundred words at a time. The act of creative writing soothes and settles me and allows me the fantasy that I actually have some control over my own life.

Very excited to see the front page news this a.m. about a super famous writer now going the self-publishing route. "I did it because I'm a curmudgeon," David Mamet wrote. He wants control not just over his manuscript, but how it is marketed. Of course his self publishing will be done under the aegis of ICM, the agency that represents him and other top drawer artists (not puny authors like me). But it heralds a new wide acceptance for self publishing and knocks down another boulder of stigma usually attached to that industry. So yay, David Mamet. Thank you for your thoughts.

The books I keep...forever
I have so many books that sometimes I have to purge. Sometimes this purging is a necessity because we have moved house. Once in awhile it happens because there is just no more room for books on our shelves. In my house there are hundreds if not thousands of books.
Some books I know I will never give away. Among them are memoirs: Mary Karr's "Liar's Club;" Susan Cheever's "Home Before Dark;" Esmeralda Santiago's "When I Was Puerto Rican" to name a few. Some are childhood favorites; "Winnie the Pooh," "Alice in Wonderland," Sterling North's remarkable memoir "Rascal," about a boy and his raccoon. I will always have all the novels John Updike wrote about his character Rabbit Angstrom. And i still think the novel "The Witches of Eastwick" is far superior to the movie.
If I had to name my favorite book, I could not say. All I know is that there are dozens of books I'll treasure until my dying day.

I've always been a big fan of the library. In fact, as a kid growing up in Atlantic City, the library located in the basement of my school, the Richmond Avenue School, was one of my favorite hang outs. The librarian grew so familiar with me that she pretended not to notice when I started taking out adult books. She even gave me a gift of my own set of the Betty McDonald "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle" series because I checked the four volumes out so often.
At the Katonah Village Library yesterday I took out T.C. Boyle's new novel, "San Miquel." I love T.C. Boyle. I can't wait to delve into it.

Longtime author, new to GoodReads
Hi, my name is Eve Marx and I'm the author of a half dozen or so books about sex and relationships. I also recently published a novel, a dark romantic comedy called "Beddington Place: Watch Your Back, Cover Your Tracks," that I think is the perfect plane/vacation read. I'm a lifelong reader who first got into books because I was a lonely only child and my family situation was difficult. Immersing myself in other peoples' stories, real or imagined, helped me better understand (and deal with) my own. As I explore GoodReads, I'm looking to meet new friends, interest others in my books, and, most of all, engage in book conversations. This is my first blog on the site. I hope I haven't bored you. The main things I appreciate in a book is a well told story. If it's funny, that's a perk.
