I’d say this book is around the 3.5-4 star margin.

I did enjoy a lot of this book. There were a lot of cute moments between Bran and Nikolai, and I liked the tension at the start (though I’m not a dark romance girly at all and was a little uncomforta I’d say this book is around the 3.5-4 star margin.

I did enjoy a lot of this book. There were a lot of cute moments between Bran and Nikolai, and I liked the tension at the start (though I’m not a dark romance girly at all and was a little uncomfortable at times at the dubious consent 😅). I also liked the character development and how both characters had their own distinct personalities and voices. I did have some issues with this book though.

1. It was way too long. It basically became a repetitive cycle of them having sex, Brandon running away, them arguing, breaking up, agonising over it, then getting back together and having sex again. So much of this book could have been cut out. I liked the smut but it became extremely repetitive as well; I think the story would have benefited from more plot and more relationship development instead of so many smut scenes.

2. I think things moved a little too slowly. At the start, it was great. I liked the slow build up of tension and how Brandon wasn’t immediately dick-whipped from their first encounter. But as I got further in, I noticed it took WAY too long for them to open up to each other about their ‘demons’ (Nikolai only finds out about Brandon’s right at the end of the 600 page book), to be vulnerable with each other, and to advance their relationship in any meaningful way outside of sex. There were so many scenes I wanted to skim through because they started to lose my attention, which is a shame, because when the scenes were good, they were GOOD.

3. I loved Nikolai for the most part, and I loved how he eventually became a good boyfriend to Bran, but I’ll admit, sometimes, he had me cringing SO HARD. Firstly, the whole naming his dick thing. I managed to ignore it for the most part, but it was so cringey and weird to me that an adult man named his dick? Second, the non-stop, irrational jealousy. Some instances I understood it to an extent, but he literally had a hissy fit AT A CHILD for giving Brandon a flower. Yes, A CHILD. Any time someone interacted with Brandon in any kind of way, regardless of age, gender, etc, he’d throw a hissy fit and fantasise about murdering them (yes, even the child). So weird.

4. I didn’t really like the ending. I didn’t like how, after so many pages of them not opening up to each other, Brandon never willingly opened up to Nikolai at all - it was revealed through a video. I also had to put my phone down for a few minutes so I could process what just happened when Brandon walked in, grabbed some broken glass out Niko’s hand and stabbed himself in the neck. It just seemed so abrupt and strange and out of place?

I know it seems like I’m moaning a lot when I gave the book such a high rating, but when the book was good, it was SO GOOD! That’s why I can’t give it lower than 4 stars, even though there were a lot of issues with it. ...more
