You can't be a writer without first being a reader. Read everything, especially bad writing. It's not hard to find. That's what you'll learn the most from, I think.

A very close second is WRITE. Write about everything. Write stories, poems, journal entries, recipes. Every time you write, you'll get a little better. You have to write some pretty bad stuff before you start writing the pretty good stuff, so get started, write some lousy prose, and you're on your way.(less)

Sorry for my late response. The idea for The Loop is based very loosely on a Buddhist concept called “shared karma,” in which those who were bonded together, in a way, might be reborn and find each other again in the next life. I found that super romantic.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer—I don’t know when that started, probably when I read my first “real” book.

My motivation comes from just needing to create stuff. I actually haven’t written in a very long time, though I will have a new novel this year. I also write music, and poems, and I try to draw, and build stuff…

Of the books I’ve written, my favorite so far is the one I’m wrapping up right now. It’s ironically titled “Untitled,” and has a pair of teens making an awful lot of trouble for themselves. I can’t give any more away than that. 🤞

A Thousand Cherry Trees...

Last year I wrote a novel titled "A Thousand Cherry Trees," a thriller set in a tiny southern California desert town. My agent and I were very excited about it, and the editors who received it thought it was just great, yet none opted to publish it.

"A Thousand Cherry Trees" made them uneasy. It can't be neatly tucked into any particular genre; teens will love it but it wasn't necessarily written f Read more of this blog post »
