K. Bird Lincoln is an ESL professional, breast cancer survivor, and writer living on the windswept Minnesota Prairie with family and a huge addiction to frou-frou coffee. House of the Beast by Michelle Wong

Now that I’ve read the description again, the occasional manga-like illustrations present in this book make sense– the author is also an illustrator. The illustrations were fun, but did kind of add a sense of adolescence to this story.
