Second Language First Novel
I recently had the opportunity to do a Q&A session at the Goodreads group Romance Readers Reading Challenges. Here' some of the questions and my reply:

Hi Jane!
Thanks for your warm welcome! That's right! English is not my native language. It's my third language. :) My native language is Russian. The book was first written and published in Russian, and the thought of translating it was very natural and simple. When the translation started I was horrified. I could not find right idioms, that would carry the same weight of the words. I felt if I deviate from translating the details that one can feel, will betray my book. I wanted to preserve and convey the juice of the language that expresses environment, relationships, jokes, and everything else that we live in.
I worked with several editors. My Russian book was on my lap and we were going sentence by sentence through it. At that time I had a feeling that they all hated me simultaneously. :) Two of them were native English speakers with PhDs in English.
After the editorial work was over, the manuscript was read by many people from different professions, different ages, educational level, and when I realized that they love the book, I decided that it was time to publish it.
I am admitting that to translate and edit the book was much harder then to write it in Russian.

Like Gone With The Wind we see a society collapse through the eyes of a generation growing up in privilege before tragedy struck, working to adapt and survive when the world changed around them. Both books rely on a strong female leading character.
Like Same Time Next Year it is an intimate love story which focuses on the primary couple. All other characters are given minor roles. Both stories stretch over decades.
Like The Notebook, this is a story which stretches over a lifetime. Both books start with the couple having a summer romance, and both couples are torn apart by interfering parents who disapprove of their child's selected partner.
Unlike any of them, it is a true story set in recent and current times. It shows the Soviet Union when generation of young adults lived happy, cultured, educated lives until the country collapsed around them. Even then, their goal was to find happiness somewhere else. This book gives voice to a group, a time, and a perspective not previously revealed in film or literature, a society living in comfort on the other side of the iron curtain that America hasn't heard about.
As a contemporary romance, this book will appeal to the broad range of women romance readers.
As a true story, it offers a look at everyday life in late and post-Soviet Russia. Readers of The Master and Margarita would find the look into late Soviet times intriguing.
As a study of the human condition, it offers a contrast between the indecisiveness that cost Serge his marriage and nearly cost his life with Janna's decisive action leading to a new life in America.

Wishing you bunches of Love in the coming New Year!
I want to share a little story related to Love Is Never Past Tense. A couple of years ago, when the book was not yet published, I was flying after my seminar from Philadelphia, PA. On my lap, I had a proof copy of the book. I was scanning the lines, double checking for mistakes.
Next to me was sitting a man who asked me what I was reading and I told him. He asked me to show him the book. I gave it to him and he started reading it. He did not give it back to me until we landed in Chicago.
He was a PhD graduate from Yale. He handed me his business card and asked me to let him know when the book was published. He said he wanted to buy it.
I took the card and sent him the book as a gift. After he finished it, he called me and said that he sees a great movie created from this book and he is sharing it with his friends.
A year later they organized a huge event presenting Love Is Never Past Tense. They flew me to Omaha, offered me a great hotel and placed an article in a local newspaper!
Recently, the book was read by a screen play writer, who fell in love with it. He wrote a screen play, and now we are looking for sponsors to give life to it on the screen.
Today, for the first time, I put the book on a $.99 sale for winter holidays! It’s all over the place. Here are a couple of quick links:
