On Sweet Tea, Podcasts, and Fall
I’m just back from the coast, where I was scheduled to be at The Little River Shrimp Festival. Unfortunately, that was canceled due to rainy, windy weather, but Sugar and I had a few other things scheduled in the area–and I ended up doing a rainy day pop-up signing at Barnes & Noble, which was a lot of fun. Perhaps because it was a last minute thing, I was in laid back mode and didn’t take a single picture! I did manage to get a few pictures sitting on the beach after the storm cleared, though. One evening we took a picnic out and ate dinner in our beach chairs. October may be my favorite month at the beach even if it does rain.
In other news, I’m hard at work on next year’s fall release. Stay tuned for a cover reveal in the coming months. I think I mentioned this book will feature Liz Talbot, right? I know I told y’all she shows up in Hadley’s next book, TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE, out April 7, 2026.
While I’m enjoying fall, I can’t help but feel Thanksgiving fast approaching and of course Christmas won’t be far behind. The second edition of my first book set at Christmas, Lowcountry Bordello releases November 4 with a beautiful new cover. (It would make a great Christmas gift for all your reader friends! Get signed copies of most of my books directly from my store!)
While you’re shopping, preorder your copy of TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE as a little Christmas gift to yourself–my lips are sealed.
This month in the Lowcountry Book Club, the Two Southern Susans chatted with Joy Callaway about her June release, Sing Me Home to Carolina. If you’re a group member, I hope you’ll watch the interview at your convenience. If you aren’t a member and would like to join, we’d love to have you! If you don’t use Facebook, all of my book of the month discussions are available on YouTube! Speaking of the Lowcountry Book Club, my team has been discussing the possibility of adding a podcast in addition to the Book of the Month videos posted in the group and to YouTube. Stay tuned for more on that.
I know iced tea can sometimes feel like a summer recipe, but at our house, we drink it every day. Even as the days grow colder, I keep a Tervis tumbler full of iced tea close at hand. Who knows, it may give me a creative boost. This month, I hope you’ll enjoy my Mamma’s Iced Tea recipe, which is the newest addition to my recipe archive. It’s the one I use to make a gallon every other day.
Until next month…

On Fall, Preorders, and Celebrations
Last week, Sugar and I were in St. Pete Beach, Florida, for the annual NINC (Novelists, Inc.) conference. As the weather turns crisp at night in South Carolina, I was thankful to enjoy the warmth of Florida for a few days. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the cooler weather as well, but there’s something about the sun on my face, a refreshing dip in the pool, and a warm ocean breeze that does my heart good. And it’s so wonderful to reconnect with friends and colleagues I don’t see very often as we meet to discuss the business of writing and publishing.
I’m looking forward to what fall holds, as moving into a new season on the calendar also means I’m starting a new project–one I hope you’ll be as excited about as I am. I’ve turned in the edits for my April release, TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE, and I’m ready to dive into my fall release for 2026. I don’t have a cover to share yet, but look for one around January – February. Speaking of TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE, preorders are now live!
Before I go and get too sentimental about changing seasons, there is much to celebrate this month. The second edition of Lowcountry Bordello is coming out on November 4, and I’m excited to share the new cover. There are a lot of fun elements we were able to include, but I think the starfish under the tree are my favorite.
Now, for a moment, please walk with me down memory lane. Who remembers this cover? This is the very first cover for Lowcountry Boil! (We’ve come a long way since then.) The first edition was released on September 18, 2012. So much has happened since then!
When it was released, I couldn’t imagine all the fabulous friends I’d make along the way or all of the incredible readers I’d meet. My readers are the reason I write, and I hope you’ve enjoyed being along for the journey!
And now for this month’s recipe…
Mamma’s Baked Country Ham will be served on Carolyn Talbot’s table in the upcoming TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE. Yes, this is a Carolina Tales series book, starring Hadley Cooper. But, Liz and her whole family will appear as well, and Mamma will put on an out-of-this-world Easter feast featuring this savory baked country ham alongside her legendary sides—think fluffy biscuits, deviled eggs, and all the trimmings that make a Southern holiday table unforgettable.
Until next month…

On New Character Profiles and Recipe Updates
Thank you so much for your grace and understanding regarding the delay of TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE. I deeply appreciate all the kind messages y’all have sent, and it feels like a huge weight has been lifted.
Exciting news! There’s a new bundle in the store for you to enjoy. It’s the Carolina Tales Series, available in print or eBook. We do not have an audio version of Beginnings – The Sullivan’s Island Supper Club, so no audio bundle, I’m afraid. This is perfect Christmas gift for your friends who want to be caught up before TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE comes out!
Are we friends on Facebook? Have you seen the “Meet the Sullivan’s Island Supper Club” post? I know some of you saw it last month on Instagram, but not everyone is on Instagram, and I love these profiles so much! My team worked really hard on these and I’m excited to share them with more readers!
Do y’all ever change the way you make things over time? I surely do, and when I made Mamma’s Picnic Potato Salad over the weekend, I remembered that I hadn’t updated the written recipe in a while. I love this potato salad so much it’s dangerous to have it in the refrigerator! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. You can view the newly updated recipe just by clicking here!
Until next month…

On Tomatoes and Tough Decisions
I hope you’re doing well! We’re deep into a Carolina summer here, and beginning to enjoy fresh vegetables from the garden. You may recall that gardening is not my gift at all, but thankfully, Brandon enjoys it. I’m looking forward to the homegrown tomatoes he’ll be ready to pick any day now. June Pinks are my favorite, and have been since childhood. My grandmother used to grow them, and I special ordered some seeds. In my view, there’s nothing better than a tomato sandwich made with a ripe, juicy June Pink.
I’m sure you’ll understand when I tell you the thing I’m most grateful for is that Brandon is feeling good and enjoying time in the garden.
Thankfully, things are finally beginning to settle down in my world. I know you know how crazy things have been for our family over the last five years, and I have to say how much all the kind words that have come my way have meant to me. I deeply appreciate the encouragement and especially all the prayers.
Because I have the absolute best readers–and I count every one of you as a friend–I never want to give you anything less than a book that’s been professionally prepared all the way through every phase of editing, proofreading, formatting, et cetera. I want to release the audio version on the same day as all the other formats. I don’t ever want to rush a book through any part of the process. I also don’t want to release another “beach book” in late summer or early fall.
I’m afraid I’ve been tempted to rush things so I could get this book out in July. But what I really need is a complete schedule reset, which brings me to a difficult announcement regarding TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE. I’ve decided to postpone its release until April 7, 2026. This allows me the breathing room to get myself back on schedule and not take shortcuts. This is the right thing for me, and it’s the right thing for this book. I so hope you won’t lose patience with my repeated delays–I really do apologize. I promise this is the last one, and this time, I’m giving myself the time I need instead of band-aiding the whole process.
This will set us up to release the next book in early November 2026, and in 2027, we’ll keep the same pattern and give readers a consistent release schedule: early April and late October / early November. Thank you so much for your patience with me. I so hope you’ll enjoy TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE when it finally arrives in the spring.
Do you have a friend who enjoys ebooks, but has never read the Liz Talbot mysteries? Here’s a great way to introduce them! The Liz Talbot Mystery Series: Volume One is now available exclusively in my bookstore. This bundle is offered at a discount and includes the first three Liz Talbot Mysteries, plus Postcards From Stella Maris AND a bonus–the first book in the Carolina Tales series, Big Trouble on Sullivan’s Island!
Audio and print bundles coming soon!
If you or your friend has read the first two Liz Talbot Mysteries, the second edition of Lowcountry Boneyard is now available. The second edition of Lowcountry Bordello is still set to release in early November.
Lowcountry Book Club members…Thursday, July 31, Susan Zurenda and I will chat with Kaira Rouda about the July Book of the Month, her brand new release, Jill is Not Happy. We are beyond excited to chat with Kaira about her newest book and hope you are able to join us.
Fellow foodies, it’s too hot to cook where I am, but I hope you’ll enjoy Hadley’s favorite smoothie. She (and I–and Brandon too) love this smoothie and it’s so good for your brain, we call it a “Brain Smoothie.” I actually developed this years ago, after Dad was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and have tweaked it over the years. If y’all make one, I hope you enjoy sipping it on the porch, or by the pool, or at the lake or the beach or wherever you love to read and sip.

On Writing and Reading Brighter Things
Just a quick hello from the writing sanctuary, otherwise known as my office, or the Worldwide Headquarters of Stella Maris Books! I’m hard at work getting TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE ready to go out into the world. Because of everything that’s happened in my world over the past year, and because I did have to postpone the release of this book, I won’t announce a release date until everything is fully buttoned up. But I will say…for sure…it’s coming soon! (It will be released this summer, I promise! Please stay tuned.)
If you missed last month’s announcement, there is a brand new Liz Talbot Mysteries bundle available in my bookstore for ebook and audiobook readers who might be new to the Liz Talbot Mysteries Series! You can now read Lowcountry Boil, Lowcountry Bombshell, Lowcountry Boneyard, Postcards from Stella Maris, and as a bonus, Big Trouble on Sullivan’s Island, all in The Liz Talbot Mystery Series: Volume One. I’m also working on a print version of this bundle, which will be available soon. If you need a print version for your next beach trip, don’t forget the second edition of Lowcountry Boneyard is available. Look for the second edition of Lowcountry Bordello in early November.
This month in The Lowcountry Book Club, Susan Zurenda and I chatted with Kristy Woodson Harvey about the June Book of the Month, her brand new release, Beach House Rules. We were beyond excited to chat with Kristy about her newest book and hope you joined us or tuned in on Facebook or YouTube at the best time for you.
Finally, fellow foodies, I am so sorry to not have a recipe for you this month! I am so focused on the new book, I haven’t had a chance to select one and kitchen test it. Y’all are thinking about vacation right now anyway, right? I promise there will be a recipe next month!

On Gratitude, Book Bundles, and Comfort Food
Y’all, I promised myself I wasn’t going to share any more sad news. There’s been a good bit of it over the past three – four years, and I’m mindful that you have troubles of your own and no need to hear about mine. And yet, because I’ve shared things in the past, I feel it’s only right to let you know about major developments.
Recently, Dad entered hospice. He passed from this life into the next early on the morning of Monday, May 19. We are forever grateful for the folks who kept him comfortable, and for everyone who participated in his care throughout his illness. Of course we are devastated by our loss, but we’re also comforted that he and Mom are together again. And I am equally thankful for the words of kindness and support that many of you have offered up during this difficult time. Y’all mean so much more to me than I can ever properly express.
Naturally all of this this has been a significant interruption in my writing schedule, but my editor and I are moving forward with TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE in the weeks to come and I still expect to launch the book this summer. In fact, I plan to have a firm launch date to announce very soon. So please stay tuned for that!
In happier book news, there’s a brand new Liz Talbot Mysteries bundle available in my bookstore for anyone who might be new to the Liz Talbot Mysteries Series! You can now read Lowcountry Boil, Lowcountry Bombshell, Lowcountry Boneyard, Postcards from Stella Maris, and as a bonus, Big Trouble on Sullivan’s Island all in The Liz Talbot Mystery Series: Volume One. Right now this bundle is available in ebook format. I’m also working on a print version of this bundle which will be available soon. And if you missed last month’s announcements, then I’m pleased to let you know that the second edition of Lowcountry Boneyard is now live everywhere in all formats, including audio! Look for the second edition of Lowcountry Bordello in early November.
Next week in The Lowcountry Book Club, Susan Zurenda and I will chat with Mary Alice Monroe about the May Book of the Month, her brand new release, Where the Rivers Merge. Most months we post our discussion videos on Thursday mornings, but this month we’ll be sharing the chat on Friday morning instead. Mary Alice is on quite the book tour, and she was kind enough to make time to chat with us. Please be on the lookout for the video on Friday, May 30th, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern instead of Thursday, May 29th.
Finally, fellow foodies, I hope you enjoy this month’s recipe! This is actually my spin on my mother’s salmon patty recipe. This is comfort food in our family. My sister and brother and I all loved my mother’s salmon patties, and my brother and I have each developed our own versions. (My sister avoids cooking when possible, but she’s actually pretty good at it.) We really enjoy this one at our house, and hope that you do too. I typically serve them with rice, lima beans and corn, and roasted sweet potatoes. If you try it out for yourself, be sure to let me know what you think.

On Liz Talbot News, Spring Appearances, and Gavin’s Newest Recipe
I hope you are well and enjoying spring! I’m still wrapping up TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE, and I’ve been so deep into my story, I haven’t been able to read as much lately. This happens to me at some point during the writing of every book. I just can’t have any more people in my head.
The most exciting thing happening in my world right now is that we’ve launched the second edition of Lowcountry Boneyard! I’m buttoning up the last of the details and waiting for the audiobook production to wrap up, but all other formats are available. The audio is for sale now through my website, but won’t be available through other retailers until May 1.
I confess, while Lowcountry Boneyard is one of my personal favorites of my books, (I know, I shouldn’t have favorites!) I never truly loved the original cover. But I adore this new one…
Lowcountry Boneyard, second edition
Cover Design: Elizabeth Mackey
To celebrate this release, right now the ebook version of Lowcountry Boil is on sale. If you haven’t read it yet, grab your copy in my store or at any major retailer except for Kobo for just 99¢. If you are a Kobo reader, you can get a copy for free as part of their Buy One Get One Free Sale on select thrillers when you purchase any other participating eBook now through April 30th. I hope you’ll take advantage of these deals if you’ve been waiting to give the Liz Talbot Mystery Series a try! Since Lowcountry Boil is the first book in the series, it would make a lovely gift for a fellow book lover too.
In events news, I’m heading up to Maryland for the annual Malice Domestic conference in Bethesda April 25th – 27th. This will be my first Malice Domestic in several years and I simply cannot wait! If you’ve never been, it’s a real treat. Fans and authors interact frequently with panels, signings, and more. I’m honored to have been asked to participate in a panel about independent publishing, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Now in The Lowcountry Book Club, you can watch Susan Zurenda and I chat with Mary Martha Greene regarding the April Book of the Month, The Cheese Biscuit Queen: Kiss My Aspic!. If you haven’t joined the group yet, we’d love to have you! Please watch at your convenience anytime and leave your comments or additional questions in the comments. If you don’t use Facebook, you can watch the discussion on my YouTube channel instead!
Finally, I have a new recipe. This one will appear in TROUBLE’S TURN TO LOSE. It’s one of those things Gavin makes for Hadley, and I confess, while our household has completely fallen off the plant-based wagon, this recipe is one we all enjoy. Check it out here: https://susanmboyer.com/susans-recipes/gavins-better-than-chicken-salad.

On Changes of Heart and Black Bean Burgers
Are you as excited for spring as I am? I confess I’m as busy as I’ve ever been writing Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming) and tending to my family’s various needs, but I am so looking forward to sneaking in a bit of quiet porch reading in the warmer days ahead!
As for my work-in-progress, many of you reached out after last month’s cover reveal for Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming) to ask if I’d experienced a change of heart about a possible Liz Talbot – Hadley Cooper crossover. The short answer is yes! Although I am on record many times confirming that Stella Maris does not exist in Hadley Cooper’s world, I am delighted to share that I have indeed been moved to reconsider my position on the matter, and this new book will reflect that change. Come June, y’all can expect Liz and Rhett to make their way to Sullivan’s Island for a visit, just as some of y’all suspected after having the first look at the cover of Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming).
I was also recently asked if it is possible to read previous installments of my newsletter for those of you who might have missed a few or are new to the list. I’m pleased to share that this is now something you can do if you’re so inclined simply by clicking here.
This month in The Lowcountry Book Club, I’ll be chatting with author Grace Helena Walz about the Book of the Month, her debut novel, Southern by Design. (Susan Zurenda will not be able to join us this month due to her own family health crisis.) The video will be posted in the group at 10:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, March 27th. If you haven’t joined the group yet, we’d love to have you! Please watch at your convenience anytime after the video goes live and leave your comments or additional questions in the comments!
Last but certainly not least, a tasty treat from the Carolina Tales for my fellow foodies! Many of y’all have requested this recipe, and I’m delighted to share it now. This one is not mine, and we have the lovely Ginger Jacks to thank for it instead.
Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, Ginger whipped up this copycat version of the same dish served at Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island and we are so grateful that she did. She kindly made these black bean burgers amontillado for The Sullivan’s Island Supper Club’s launch party, and they were an absolute hit. If you decide to try this recipe out for yourself, please let us know if you enjoy it as much as we did!

On Hard Things, Blessings, and a Holy City Smoke
Is it just me, or is time racing by faster every month? I simply cannot believe that 2025 is here and January is gone! My head is positively spinning.
I generally keep my posts upbeat and cheerful, because who on Earth needs anything sobering to read right now? But today, I have to share some hard things with you, because it impacts my schedule. When an author moves a release date and cancels events, she owes her readers an explanation.
I know, we’ve been here before, haven’t we? The past several years have been quite challenging for our family. You may recall that I lost my mother to cancer a year ago this past October, and I know I’ve shared with y’all that she was my dad’s primary caretaker, and that he has Alzheimer’s. Today, as I’m writing this on Friday, is my mom’s birthday. She would’ve been eighty-two.
This is by no means the primary calamity in my world, but it’s also not insignificant to me that my last two books have suffered schedule changes and canceled tour dates due to our ongoing family health crises. Recently, our family has dealt with another plot twist.
The same week that Helene blew through the Carolinas, my grown son who lives with us (no, he’s not Deacon, if you’ve read The Sullivan’s Island Supper Club) had an episode we would later learn was a seizure. Because he’s the picture of health, very fit, at first none of us panicked. When he had the second seizure a week later, my granddaughter was with him and called 911. The ambulance had to park down the street and take him out via a go-cart-type vehicle because all the large trees and power lines down in our neighborhood from the storm made the streets impassable.
The scans they did at the hospital showed something in his brain the doctors at first called a spot, then a lesion, and later a tumor. My baby–his name is Brandon–had brain surgery in Charlotte in October. After a few weeks of healing and waiting for pathology results, he underwent six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation starting just before Thanksgiving and ending right after New Year’s. Brandon and I stayed with family in North Carolina during his treatment at Levine Cancer Institute / Atrium Health.
Because he’s young and otherwise healthy, he weathered the treatment as well as anyone could have, with minimal side effects, thanks be to God. We have been so blessed, and I am so grateful for this and many other blessings…that we had family we could stay with close to Brandon’s care team…the doctors, nurses, and technicians that make up his phenomenal care team at Levine are nothing short of amazing…his really solid health insurance that has made it possible for him to get the best care…the company he works for, which provides him with this excellent coverage…and the ongoing prayers of so many friends and family. We have much to be thankful for.
We’re praying hard that he’s beaten this thing down and it never rears its ugly head again. But he will have to have scans every two months for the rest of his life, we’re told. I think it’s safe to say all of our lives have been forever changed over the last several months.
Nevertheless, we’re all striving for as much normalcy as we can get every day. Brandon works every day and loves his job, though his energy is sapped from the treatments and he does take frequent naps. My granddaughters are going to school and work, Sugar continues to work and travel, and I am at my desk most days now that we’re home.
I’m so sorry to over-share and burden you with all of that, but I risk you thinking I don’t take my work seriously if I keep moving deadlines and canceling events and don’t fully explain.
So…as you might imagine, I’m behind. Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming), the next book in the Carolina Tales Series, will release June 24 , 2025 instead of April 8 as originally planned. If you have already preordered from any retailer, you should receive a notice from the retailer that the preorder has been canceled. I’m so sorry, but I have no choice here as I need more than sixty additional days, and one of the retailers will only allow a sixty-day extension.
In the midst of everything, my work is my refuge, and I am so excited about this book. Because life has repeatedly shown me that uncertainty is certain, I don’t plan to offer preorders in the future. It’s just too stressful when a release date has to move. I apologize for the inconvenience, and ask that those of you who preordered to please order the book again when it’s released.
Because of everything I’ve shared, and the unpredictable nature of my life right now, I’ve canceled all of my planned events for 2025 with the exception of a few multi-author events (festivals, conventions, et. cetera) which won’t be negatively affected should I have to cancel last minute. I know you understand that family comes first, and I just can’t run the risk of leaving an organization in the lurch with no speaker for a luncheon or what have you.
Okay…shifting back to happy things…and I have to add here that our household is committed to finding the joy in every single day.
First, I’m thrilled to share that we’re still on track for a cover reveal for Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming) very soon, so please stay tuned for that!
While I have limited my schedule of events this year, I was able to squeeze in a few last month. The timing just worked out, between the end of Brandon’s treatment and when we next have to be in Charlotte for scans and appointments. It was wonderful to get out and see folks while I had the opportunity! In addition to a couple private events, I spent a lovely afternoon with the Surf Golf Club Book Club in North Myrtle Beach, and I was delighted to join Caroline Cleveland and Roger Jones at Mary Alice Monroe’s Wild Dunes Author Event Kickoff Party as well.
Confession…in the wake of the chaos that has been my world over the past three years, my email inbox has gotten completely out of control. If you emailed me and didn’t receive a reply, please know this is not normally how I operate. When things are on an even keel in my world, I answer every single reader email, usually the same day it comes in. It makes my day to hear from readers!
That said, I’m ashamed to say, I recently had a little bubble on my phone to tell me I had more than 1,200 unread emails! (This might have caused a rash on my arms.) I’ve spent the last several weeks getting my situation under control, but with an inbox that contains business correspondence, marketing emails, phishing emails, newsletters from everywhere I do business, et cetera, I know I missed a few lovely notes from readers. Several of you have recently received replies that are two years or more late. Y’all, I am so, so sorry!
Because there were some good questions among the emails, I’ve started a new feature called, “Questions From The Inbox.” For queries which seem to be something other people might wonder about as well, I’m answering the questions on short videos. I’ll share them on YouTube and Facebook. I’m having fun with these! You can check out the first one here if you’d care to.
Last, but not least, by special request–and to save one poor husband’s left arm (his wife emailed to offer it to me for this recipe)– you’ll find the Holy City Smoke cocktail now available among my recipes! This is Sugar’s spin on our favorite drink served at Hank’s and featured in Big Trouble on Sullivan’s Island. While we did get the ingredient list from an inside source, Sugar had to employ a lot of trial and error to get the proportions just right. It may not be exact, but it tastes good to us and I’m delighted to share. If you mix one up and give it a try, I do hope that you enjoy it!
Thank you so much for reading as I’ve poured my heart here. I appreciate you more than I can adequately express. And I’m looking forward to a season with less stormy weather and calmer waters, where I can regularly put out books and travel to meet readers. I have faith that I’ll get back to that place. As they say, every storm runs out of rain.
Wishing you and yours smooth sailing throughout 2025 and beyond.

On Family Time and Holiday Cheer
As 2024 draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the past 12 months and throughout my writing career. While I’m now focused on my 2025 goals, I am also extremely grateful for all that has happened this year. Readers like you make this adventure possible, and I would be remiss not to share my gratitude for you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here!
I’m hard at work writing and addressing a variety of administrative tasks to prepare for the release of Trouble’s Turn to Lose (forthcoming), the next book in the Carolina Tales Series in the spring. I cannot wait to share more about this book with everyone! I’ll have a cover to share in January—stay tuned!
This past month has seen my time split between writing and tending to my family both here and in North Carolina. I must thank the lovely folks who run The Beauty and The Bean in my hometown of Faith, North Carolina. Their delightful salon-and-coffee-shop combo has given me a great place to work on my manuscript between family situations and I have so enjoyed commandeering a quiet corner of the cafe as my office-away-from-home. It’s quite possible a similar business might show up in a novel…
With Christmas having come and gone, I hope that you embraced the chaos with joy. I am fortunate to have grown children and older grandchildren these days, so the holidays are now a collaborative affair. As I mentioned, I’ve been splitting much of my time these last few weeks between home and North Carolina, and have been enjoying a few nights in my own bed as well as precious time spent focusing on our family’s most cherished traditions.
Wishing you all the peace and joy of the season!
