Carter F. Smith is a criminal justice professor, former Army CID special agent, and historian of America’s rougher edges. His work follows the true story of Samuel Mason, a Revolutionary War captain who traded his commission for a life along the shadowy bends of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

Smith blends investigative experience with deep archival research to trace how an American patriot became one of the nation’s first organized crime bosses. His writing brings readers into a world of frontier justice, river piracy, and the early criminal networks that shaped the young republic.

When he isn’t digging through eighteenth-century court records or tracking the movements of outlaws, Smith teaches at Middle Tennessee State University and conti

That works with research, processing thoughts, and connecting with more established writers. I think the best books are written by people who thought about what the reader would wonder about and answered the question in such a way as to help us think about the question and then be impressed with the answer.(less)

To me, writer's block is when you want to write something but cannot come up with what you are supposed to write. I don't write what I am supposed to write -- I write what I must write! With that said, I have been a criminal investigator and had to write what happened in a certain circumstance and did not know how I should say it. That's not writer's block to me. If I don't have something to write I go do something else. I make times for writing, and often have most of what I want to write planned out. I think that's the introvert in me.(less)

🏴‍☠️ Sam’s Take: “Swamp Fox Tactics”

November 20, 1780 — Blackstock’s Farm, South Carolina

Banastre Tarleton thought he’d caught Thomas Sumter flat-footed. Instead, he rode into a trap.

Sumter set his militia behind fences and farm buildings, with sharpshooters in the trees. Tarleton charged headlong and met a wall of fire. Horses went down, dragoons tumbled, redcoats scattered.

Sumter himself took a bullet to the chest but lived. Tarle
