ERIC SHAW QUINN wrote what would become his debut novel during his spare time while working as an advertising director and theatre critic. But Say Uncle, a comic and celebratory tale of an eccentric gay man who receives custody of his infant nephew after his sister is killed in a tragic accident, took ten years to find a publisher. The idea of a gay man raising a child was deemed so controversial at the time that one editor went to far as to reject the manuscript with the words, “You and I just march to a different drummer, Mr. Quinn.” Upon its publication, the film rights were snatched up almost immediately, where after some of Hollywood’s brightest stars spent another few years agonizing over whether or not American moviegoers were ready ...more

The first answer that comes to mind is Louis and Lestat from Anne Rice's sumptuous and romantic Vampire Chronicles. But then I think of Alexias and Lysis from Mary Renault's Last of the Wine - I actually swooned while reading that book! - and Achilles and Patroclus from the Iliad? And there's Nick and Nora from The Thin Man and Nancy Drew and Ned Nickerson oh and Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain and Rhett and Scarlett of GWTW -- to be fair I've only ever seen the movie though the book sits here on my desk waiting for the day I have six months to spare. And I love Jonathan and David (though maybe that's not strictly fiction) and of course Michael and Kevin (or is it Gra or Scott?) and EVEN Paige and Angel from my own books. But when I think about it the thing I like best about Louis and Lestat is that their relationship is still evolving before my eyes in work after delicious work 40 years later!! That's tough to beat, even from the stiff competition that I mentioned. (less)

I can lose the twenty pounds, but it’s going to take some time. So if my goal is not to eat a chocolate cake today, then I’m more likely to achieve it. Writing isn’t actually that hard, but if I’m focused on more that I can get done in a couple hours in front the computer, I get overwhelmed. I can’t write the whole novel the first day. Or plan the marketing. Or respond to editors or critics or my mother and write. So I try to set small reasonable goals – I will write for fifteen minutes today. I can’t ever stop at fifteen but if that’s the only expectation, I am much more likely to have successful day writing. And one successful day leads to the next.(less)

“But our David, he is a little rare for the world. Sometimes people destroy what they do not understand; what they haven’t seen before; what they are not expecting.”
