You don’t have to be afraid when you read my books. Well—you might be terrified for the hero, because his arch-nemesis has him at gunpoint with his back to the river Thames, demanding that he hand over the code that could spell the downfall of Europe…
But you’ll never have to squint, worrying that the romantic scene is about to get FAR too steamy—or that, in a tirade, someone is about to spew a stream of obscenities that will make you want to shut the book and go take a shower.
I don’t write sexual scenes in my books. EVER. And I do not use profanity. EVER. And yes, God lives in my stories. He is the deep foundation—you can FEEL Him.
Yet, I can prove without a shadow of a doubt that WITHOUT ANYTHING risqué, you can still have the adventur

Now, I don't go into excessive detail, but I do know what's going to happen in each chapter. So I just move through, point by point, as each event is accomplished. If I didn't have an outline and was just making it up as I went, I have no doubt I would be blocked often and my stories would be untidy. However, writer's block must not be confused with The Wall. Now, The Wall arrives during every novel about 3/4 of the way through, and it's equivalent to what happens to a marathon runner. And essentially--though you think to yourself that your story is boring, that it's lost its momentum, that something has gone wrong--it merely means that you are tired. The best thing to do is take a sort break, perhaps read something, go on a few long walks, and then forge ahead and finish. Early on, with the first couple novels, a new writer is inclined to think that there's a terrible flaw in the tale, but really, just rest is needed, and the realization that this happens every time, regardless of the story. Also, the best thing about being a writer is being able to truly BE there, in the moment, when something emotional or incredible is happening, or when a character is just beginning to live, and speak on his own. I can't really describe it, but it's an entirely unique experience. (less)

The Mute of Pendywick Place

"And the Torn Page"
Chapter One
London
November 3rd
1881

Fog.
Lurking in low, thick clouds around the faces of the buildings that lined Brompton Road. Loitering in doorways, veiling windows. Chilling the feet of the men who walked the paving with crisp steps and bowed heads. Swirling around the black skirts of the ladies who reluctantly shut ringing shop doors behind them as they ventured out into th Read more of this blog post »

“/I never asked…Who cut your hair so short?/ “Oh, Dr. Watson,” he sighed, raising his eyebrows. “When I complained, he reminded me that he had been an expert in…amputations…”
Alydia Rackham, The Mute of Pendywick Place: And the Ghost of Robin Hood's Bay

“Kjóll ferr austan, koma munu Múspells,” he murmured. of lög lýðir, en Loki stýrir; fara fíflmegir með freka allir, þeim er bróðir Býleists í för. Surtr ferr sunnan með sviga lævi, skínn af sverði sól valtíva; grjótbjörg gnata, en gífr rata, troða halir helveg, en himinn klofnar.”
Alydia Rackham, Bauldr's Tears Book One

“And it was as if the day had dawned in her mind.”
Alydia Rackham, The Mute of Pendywick Place: And the Ghost of Robin Hood's Bay

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

“It's the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter.”
Marlene Dietrich

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”
Henri Nouwen, Out of Solitude: Three Meditations on the Christian Life

“I think if I've learned anything about friendship, it's to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. Don't walk away, don't be distracted, don't be too busy or tired, don't take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. Powerful stuff.”
Jon Katz

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”
A. A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
