Having tried and failed to write 'normally', Jessica embraced failure and went on writing SF/F. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Luna Station Quarterly, New Realm Magazine, Thunder on the Battlefield: Sword (Seventh Star Press) and on CBC's The Vinyl Cafe. There's a great quote by Somerset Maugham in which he said that he only writes when inspiration strikes, so long as it strikes every morning at 9am.

I think what we call writers' block is actually motivated by fear. What if my writing is horrid? What if I don't have any ideas? What if I can't think of anything to write? I think this is normal, and the best way to shake it off is simply to write... even if it is horrid.(less)

“People are a lot like animals. Most of them are kind, but some are cruel. And the cruel ones are cruel because they were never trained properly. -- Six”

“Q: If you could be an animal, what kind of animal would you be?

A: You already are an animal.”
Douglas Coupland, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture

“How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, “This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant?” Instead they say, “No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.” A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the Universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths.”
Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
