"Picked this up because I generally like Vo’s work and the library happened to have a copy. Despite the high fantasy setting and aesthetics, it’s probably closer to her urban fantasy/magical 20th century works in tone and feel. Which is not at all a c"

"Light, cozy, fun found family. I've never been a murder mystery person, so I don't know that it would hold up if that is your thing, but the character studies are charming and beautiful and they all slot together in a multi-culturally informed tapest"

| I really enjoyed this; it felt old-fashioned in some ways, from the omniscient narration to the slow pacing (the Golem and the Jinni don't even meet until halfway through the book, and it's not a short book). Helene Wecker loves to load Chekhov's gun ...more | |

| There's a lot going on here, some of it very silly, some of it poignant and thought-provoking, all of it seemingly deliberate and thought-out. There were several questions that I expected to be answered by the end (like, why is Miriam compiling the b ...more | |
“A late yellow butterfly hovering past caught at his attention, and he watched it dance downward and settle on a dusty stem of shepherd's purse beside the way. And for a sort of gleam of time, he seemed to see it not only with his eyes, but with all of himself, the delicate veining of the yellow wings that quivered and half-closed and fanned open again, the dark velvety nap on the butterfly's slender body, the gray-green heart-shaped seedpods of the shepherd's purse, stirring in the stray breath of wind, sharing with the butterfly the last warmth of the autumn sun, and the shadow of both tangled in the hillside grass. Part of him longed to catch the butterfly, to hold it very carefully prisoned in his cupped hands and feel the life of it there and the flutter of its wings against his hollowed palms, as though in that way he could keep the small, shining moment from escaping. He had tried that once, when he was much younger, but the butterfly had turned broken and dead in his hands, and he had killed the moment and the shine and the beauty instead of keeping it, and been left with nothing but an empty feeling of desolation in his stomach because he could not mend the butterfly again.”

“Adaon smiled gravely. “Is there not glory enough in living the days given to us? You should know there is adventure in simply being among those we love and the things we love, and beauty, too.”

“Craftsmanship isn't like water in an earthen pot, to be taken out by the dipperful until it's empty. No, the more drawn out the more remains.”
