Naomi and 6 other people liked ambyr's review of Debt: The First 5,000 Years:
Debt by David Graeber
"On the one hand, this book made me think; on the other hand, a lot of what it made me think was "Graeber, you're not supporting your argument very well."

But it did make me think, and I don't regret reading it."
Naomi and 2 other people liked Marianne's review of The Little Prince:
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
"This copiously illustrated edition is quite beautiful and the strangeness of it compared to the edition I have memorized was inviting.

Every time I read this book it is about something slightly different, but very often it comes back to being about gr" Read more of this review »
Pay Me, Bug! by Christopher B. Wright
"This is a fairly standard and somewhat formulaic space opera heist adventure with all the usual suspects. The heist itself is fairly engaging, the character interactions are generally amusing but the characters are kind of one note and the main crew " Read more of this review »
Charlatans by Moisés Naím
"Good. Not great. The writing is pretty good, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't know a lot of the scams already. The psychological discussions are interesting."

I mean, there were some good scenes in the 30% of the book I read--I thought the opening sequence was pretty strong--and some striking imagery. And I have to say that reading this in parallel with Ann Leckie's Raven Tower stories did it no favors.

Rosemary Sutcliff
“A late yellow butterfly hovering past caught at his attention, and he watched it dance downward and settle on a dusty stem of shepherd's purse beside the way. And for a sort of gleam of time, he seemed to see it not only with his eyes, but with all of himself, the delicate veining of the yellow wings that quivered and half-closed and fanned open again, the dark velvety nap on the butterfly's slender body, the gray-green heart-shaped seedpods of the shepherd's purse, stirring in the stray breath of wind, sharing with the butterfly the last warmth of the autumn sun, and the shadow of both tangled in the hillside grass. Part of him longed to catch the butterfly, to hold it very carefully prisoned in his cupped hands and feel the life of it there and the flutter of its wings against his hollowed palms, as though in that way he could keep the small, shining moment from escaping. He had tried that once, when he was much younger, but the butterfly had turned broken and dead in his hands, and he had killed the moment and the shine and the beauty instead of keeping it, and been left with nothing but an empty feeling of desolation in his stomach because he could not mend the butterfly again.”
Rosemary Sutcliff, The Witch's Brat

Lloyd Alexander
“Adaon smiled gravely. “Is there not glory enough in living the days given to us? You should know there is adventure in simply being among those we love and the things we love, and beauty, too.”
Lloyd Alexander, The Chronicles of Prydain

Lloyd Alexander
“Craftsmanship isn't like water in an earthen pot, to be taken out by the dipperful until it's empty. No, the more drawn out the more remains.”
Lloyd Alexander, Taran Wanderer
