Momus by Leon Battista Alberti
"Fascinating. Different from Alberti's more famous treatises on painting and architecture, this is a very humanist satire drawing on classical sources. An interesting depiction of the frustration that Alberti clearly felt towards his job in the papal " Read more of this review »

"Three and a half stars

A combination of science journalism and queer memoir, this essay collection uses the two aspects effectively to reflect upon eachother. I liked the spotlights on the various sea creatures and I thought there were poignant momen" Read more of this review »
PRINCESS PUCK. by Una Lucy Silberrad
"This is a story mostly about Bill but also about her cousins and how they get on after their aunt dies and there are gossiping villages and kind old men as well as eccentric rich ones and family settlements and inheritances. It does it all very well " Read more of this review »

More peril and less exploring strange new worlds than the first one, but still fun. The action was occasionally a little hard to follow.

Super charming steampunk and sorcery adventure. Much as in the Books of the Raksura, Martha Wells is having a lot of fun creating fantasy species and cultures.

George Orwell can certainly write. The description of what it's like to get shot is worth the price of admission. A lot of darkly funny bits; a lot that feels very unfortunately relevant today. ...more

Rosemary Sutcliff
“A late yellow butterfly hovering past caught at his attention, and he watched it dance downward and settle on a dusty stem of shepherd's purse beside the way. And for a sort of gleam of time, he seemed to see it not only with his eyes, but with all of himself, the delicate veining of the yellow wings that quivered and half-closed and fanned open again, the dark velvety nap on the butterfly's slender body, the gray-green heart-shaped seedpods of the shepherd's purse, stirring in the stray breath of wind, sharing with the butterfly the last warmth of the autumn sun, and the shadow of both tangled in the hillside grass. Part of him longed to catch the butterfly, to hold it very carefully prisoned in his cupped hands and feel the life of it there and the flutter of its wings against his hollowed palms, as though in that way he could keep the small, shining moment from escaping. He had tried that once, when he was much younger, but the butterfly had turned broken and dead in his hands, and he had killed the moment and the shine and the beauty instead of keeping it, and been left with nothing but an empty feeling of desolation in his stomach because he could not mend the butterfly again.”
Rosemary Sutcliff, The Witch's Brat

Lloyd Alexander
“Adaon smiled gravely. “Is there not glory enough in living the days given to us? You should know there is adventure in simply being among those we love and the things we love, and beauty, too.”
Lloyd Alexander, The Chronicles of Prydain

Lloyd Alexander
“Craftsmanship isn't like water in an earthen pot, to be taken out by the dipperful until it's empty. No, the more drawn out the more remains.”
Lloyd Alexander, Taran Wanderer
