Not a collection of stories in the sense of narratives of sequences of events, but the language and imagery was striking and often beautiful. Reminded me of a Frida Kahlo painting: surreal and full of lush detail and personal meaning.

The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes
" I picked this up off the strength of a friend’s review/recommendation (described as, to paraphrase, “like someone wrote a book to pander to you specifically,”). As it transpires, that was an accurate description – this is the sort of book that makes" Read more of this review »

" My month in reading is going to be mostly dominated by a couple of thousand page tomes, so to keep my sanity I’m breaking them up with whichever of this year’s Hugo nominees for Best Novella my library has handy. Practice, Horizon and Chain was the " Read more of this review »

I really like the idea of reading from the perspective of aliens that are very unlike humans. That's what this story collection promised, and it definitely delivered on that. My strategy for reading this was not to try too hard to puzzle out what was ...more

Rosemary Sutcliff
“A late yellow butterfly hovering past caught at his attention, and he watched it dance downward and settle on a dusty stem of shepherd's purse beside the way. And for a sort of gleam of time, he seemed to see it not only with his eyes, but with all of himself, the delicate veining of the yellow wings that quivered and half-closed and fanned open again, the dark velvety nap on the butterfly's slender body, the gray-green heart-shaped seedpods of the shepherd's purse, stirring in the stray breath of wind, sharing with the butterfly the last warmth of the autumn sun, and the shadow of both tangled in the hillside grass. Part of him longed to catch the butterfly, to hold it very carefully prisoned in his cupped hands and feel the life of it there and the flutter of its wings against his hollowed palms, as though in that way he could keep the small, shining moment from escaping. He had tried that once, when he was much younger, but the butterfly had turned broken and dead in his hands, and he had killed the moment and the shine and the beauty instead of keeping it, and been left with nothing but an empty feeling of desolation in his stomach because he could not mend the butterfly again.”
Rosemary Sutcliff, The Witch's Brat

Lloyd Alexander
“Adaon smiled gravely. “Is there not glory enough in living the days given to us? You should know there is adventure in simply being among those we love and the things we love, and beauty, too.”
Lloyd Alexander, The Chronicles of Prydain

Lloyd Alexander
“Craftsmanship isn't like water in an earthen pot, to be taken out by the dipperful until it's empty. No, the more drawn out the more remains.”
Lloyd Alexander, Taran Wanderer
