I live in Paris, Texas with my husband and Albert, our standard poodle. The last one of our 4 kids entered college this year, 3 grandchildren in California. I am a physician who has practiced palliative/hospice care for children as well as general pediatric and adult medicine. I received my BA at Austin College, medical school and residency at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. My newest book is PLAYHOUSES: Sexuality and Fundamentalism, (2022, BRW). A journey from corrosive indoctrination to celebrating the differences in others. My first memoir, The Year My Mother Died, (2011, Authorhouse) explores the year following my mother's death. My second memoir, The People of Nineteenth Street, (2018, BRW) highlights the role ...more

Word Dough

One of my most treasured childhood memories, enshrined in the olfactory bulb, was the aroma of a newly opened can of Playdough. The smell was the same in every can, though I was very cognizant of the colored top I was reaching for. Though it was rarely found in my home (I'm guessing as a result of frequently leaving the lid off that resulted in a hardened unpliable mess necessitating a new batch), Read more of this blog post »

“But I had learned to survive. I may have felt as if I couldn't breathe freely at times, may have felt caged and desperate, may have questioned all I ever was, but I had learned enough to keep me where I needed to be and to live to see what life would continue to bring my way if I continued to look for it.”

“Letters of the condemned. Last words scratched on a cell’s wall. To write like that.”
Anna Kamienska

“Poetry often enters through the window of irrelevance.”
M.C. Richards

“To know what you prefer instead of humbly saying Amen to what the world tells you you ought to prefer, is to have kept your soul alive.”

Sherry Scott Though summer is coming to an end, depending on how you look at it-either from a temperature perspective or the return of school supply lists, alot of people enjoy 'lite' reads through the summer months. I highly recommend reading some works of children's book author, Patricia Reilly Giff. Lilly's Crossing is a delightful book, set in the WWII era that may be enjoyed by the whole family, especially on audio book. A companion to that book is Willow Run. Nory Ryan's Song addresses the Irish potato famine. Giff weaves difficult subjects throughout her narrative of delightful characters and one comes away with a better understanding of history through the eyes as well as the heart of a child.

Sydney Young Ooh -- look at Paris TX Ladies Book Club for what is coming up next! We need to get set on a date that you are going to have another public book signing and where.
