I am the author of a half-dozen “In 30 Minutes” guides, including Google Drive & Docs In 30 Minutes, Dropbox In 30 Minutes, Excel Basics In 30 Minutes, and Twitter In 30 Minutes. I’ve been writing about business, technology, education, and culture for years, starting with newspapers and magazines in the 1990s and later expanding to online media. I was the senior editor, new media for IDG’s Computerworld and served as the managing editor of The Industry Standard. My articles, essays, and blog posts have appeared in numerous locations, from the BBC World Service website to Lifehacker.

My interest in technology is rooted in early exposure to computers, video games, and science fiction. I am old enough to remember the original Battlestar Galact

Four quick answers:
1) You have to make time to write. It doesn't have to be long--an hour in the evening two or three times per week is fine--but you do have sit down, turn off or remove all distractions, and write.
2) Work with whatever format you are comfortable with--manuscript, essay, blog, short story--and try to experiment from time to time.
3) Do not waste time pitching agents or publishers unless you have a solid track record with traditional presses or self-publishing. I hear way to many people say "I'm waiting to hear back from a publisher." Why not get the book out there yourself, using self-publishing services offered by Amazon, Smashwords, and others?
4) Many new writers are shocked to learn publishers don't do much marketing for their authors. Learn how to do basic marketing activities, from writing cover copy and online descriptions to setting up a simple author website. If you don't know how to do this, google it or check out one of the many online forums or blogs aimed at authors.(less)

“I vividly remember going to Google Docs, opening a document at the same time other students were working on it, and seeing their differently colored cursors moving around the screen, typing new words and making edits in real time. It was an epiphany.”
Ian Lamont, Google Drive & Docs In 30 Minutes

“We’re creatures of habit when it comes to mobile contracts and the wires piping high-speed data into our homes. It’s a pain to deal with transfers, installations, and customer service interactions, so we shrug and keep paying a premium.”
Ian Lamont, Personal Finance For Beginners In 30 Minutes, Volume 1: How to cut expenses, reduce debt, and better align spending & priorities

“At the end of the day, taking 50% off a $250 dress still means walking out of the store $125 poorer.”
Ian Lamont, Personal Finance For Beginners In 30 Minutes, Volume 1: How to cut expenses, reduce debt, and better align spending & priorities

“Walk your own path. Regret nothing.”
Letter From A Mountain

“Twitter is more than just a collection of fleeting observations about everyday life. Twitter can connect people to events, information and each other in ways that have never been experienced before.”
Ian Lamont, Twitter In 30 Minutes: How to connect with interesting people, write great tweets, and find information that's relevant to you.

“Tweets about the mundane aspects of your life contain something that is vitally important to gaining followers and taking part in discussions: Authenticity.”

“Are your kids better off watching 10 hours of Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel every week?”
Ian Lamont, Personal Finance For Beginners In 30 Minutes, Volume 1: How to cut expenses, reduce debt, and better align spending & priorities

“The starting point for ‘discounts’ may be the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), an arbitrarily high price that no one will ever pay. By crossing out the high MSRP, retailers are handing shoppers a psychological victory that will make them feel good about the purchase, even if the discounted price is still expensive.”
