Marcia writes fiction that rides the line between literary fiction and contemporary women's fiction.

As a child she loved listening to her mother read Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, and Little Women. When she learned to read, Marcia took up the Reading Aloud baton and happily read to younger elementary students. She still remembers the library shelf beneath the classroom windows, and mounting the steps into the impressively cavernous BF Jones Memorial Library. The smell of books, the quiet, and the well-worn marble beneath her feet was intoxicating.

However, I am always inspired by particular music ... if I hear the 'right' music, I'm launched along the path of imagination. For me, it's usually instrumental music like Robin Meloy Goldsby' piano music, or the Piano Guys, or celtic music, or old-school movie soundtracks (before they started using compilations of existing songs). And listening to Andrea Bocelli also inspires me.(less)

Department Stores - We Hold Them Dear

It was very sad to learn this week that Lord & Taylor was closing all its stores. Although I only shopped at Lord & Taylor on city vacations, it was a beauty.

I grew up with the allure of department stores. When I was a very young girl, my mother would take us on the bus to Pittsburgh and we'd get off near the Joseph Horne Co. We'd shop there, eat at Stouffer's on Penn Avenue ... then go up to Kauf Read more of this blog post »

Terry Shames Just wanted to say that although I haven't read the RK Rowling book, I really enjoyed your review of it. Very thorough, even-handed, and generous. I liked the part where you said the first 9/10 was a 1-2 and the last 1/10 was a five. So many times an uneven book can still have satisfying moments.
