Susan Kietzman grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. She went to Connecticut College, where her mother, aunt, and grandmother went before her. After graduation, she worked in Manhattan just long enough to realize that she feels more at home in the country than in the city. This conviction did not prevent her from going to journalism school at Boston University. Kietzman next moved
to Mystic, CT, where she worked at a weekly and then a daily newspaper. Along the way, she met and married Ted and had three sons.

The family spent time in Aurora, Ontario, and then moved Midland, Michigan, where Kietzman wrote fiction in the early morning, taught English composition at a community college, and worked for various public relations firms, creating cont

I knew at some point, I would write about it. This family cottage is as much a character in my latest novel, The Summer Cottage, as the humans who inhabit it!(less)

I'm not always that productive in other areas of my life, which is why I can devote more time to books - I allow myself more time to read. Perhaps this is because I take vacation time in the summer. And part of vacation is reading under an umbrella at the beach or on my shaded front porch.
I'm currently reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead; it's an important story and he tells it both beautifully and honestly. Next up is Elizabeth Strout's Anything is Possible, followed by Word By Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries. I heard author Kory Stamper interviewed on the radio and was intrigued. My husband gave me these two books for my birthday. My mother gave me The Muralist by B. A. Shapiro, so I'll read this, too. After this may come The Little Locksmith, a memoir by Katharine Butler Hathaway. It's a book that has been on my to-read shelf for a while, and I think it's time has come. I may also read a book that a friend or family member puts into my hands and says, "You must read this."(less)

Working on the Inside

Here’s the outside – the face, the body. It’s pretty easy to take care of. Water. Soap. Shampoo. Exercise. It’s the inside, what’s in the mind, that demands more attention and intention. I’ve been doing a decent job of taking care of my mind – in that I use it to read, learn, think, explore, wonder, etc. And yet, my mind often seems to be the master of me, focusing on things that are useless or ev Read more of this blog post »

The writing in this series of short stories is descriptive and poetic, especially when detailing the small town of Klatsand, a seaside village off the coast of Oregon. And the women in these stories are independent and strong, a plus. But the stories ...more

I love Billy Collins's poetry and have read many volumes. This collection was not quite as appealing. It was published in 1995 and examines life and death in a darker and lengthier way than his later collections, which feature poems that are shorter ...more

“Savvy”
Susan Kietzman, The Summer Cottage

“Claire was the only one who called it the Gaines cottage, but she did so less and less frequently, as it was never acknowledged, and, obviously, never took. Helen grabbed the collapsible, aluminum wheelchair from the back of the car and placed it next to the rear passenger door. She pushed and pulled it into shape and then set its brakes. She then gently opened the door that held Claire’s heavy head and twig-like body. “Mother,” she said quietly. “Mother, we’re here.” Claire opened her eyes and blinked several times before speaking. “Where,” she said, eyes closed again. “At the cottage.” Helen supported her”
