You’ve done the right thing by re…moreFirst of all, you should know that this problem is more common than people let on, so please don’t feel embarrassed. You’ve done the right thing by reaching out, because education is the most powerful tool (besides maybe a jackhammer, or possibly Ashton Kutcher).

The most accessible way to distinguish between the two is scent. Before you bite into the item, take a deep whiff. Does it smell of butter, brown sugar, and melty chocolate goodness? If so, it’s most likely a chocolate chip cookie. Does it smell of moldy castle walls, locked trunks full of secrets, and erotic despair? If so, you’re probably holding a gothic romance.

If scent isn’t enough, you might be able to use taste. Caress the item gently; now lick your fingers. Dust? Gothic romance. Crumbs? Chocolate chip cookie. Both? Cookie that’s been left out for too long.

If your taste buds are confused, try touch. No matter how immense, a chocolate chip cookie is usually fairly light – even if that sucker is loaded up with nuts and junk. A gothic romance, however, is heavy enough to make your wrist tired after about twenty minutes of propping it up. Still confused? Try balancing the item on your head. If you’re able to walk quickly without it falling off, it’s a cookie. If not, it’s a gothic romance.

And finally, if all else fails, you can always resort to reading before biting. While biting a gothic romance can result in a chipped tooth, the worst that can happen from reading a chocolate chip cookies is hunger and faint dissatisfaction.

Or rather, they both influence each other consta…moreI would say that my love of literature stems from both, more than one influencing the other, per say. Or rather, they both influence each other constantly. I fell in love with poetry and prose simultaneously, and not necessarily distinctly. To me they have always been two parts of a larger whole.

My poetry is influenced by novels; most of my poems tell a story or at least set a scene that feels like part of a larger story. And my book of poetry is definitely narrative in nature.

Likewise, my novels tend to be poetic. Many of my concepts and most of my stand-out scenes come to me in flashes, like a poem, where before I know how I’ll say it or what it will do, I can *taste* the mood or the tone or the imagery. My prose, too, leans toward poetic devices to convey meaning. For me, beauty is a vital and integral part of all literature, including novels. Poetry has also taught me magnitudes when it comes to line editing. Nothing teaches you the importance of individual words and phrases quite like the poem. :)

I'm always happy to connect with book people! And wow, yes, it does look like we have quite a lot of books in common. There are actually many Neugebauers in Texas (common German surname, lots of German farmers here), and some of them are mine. :)
