William Jefferson’s first novel, Messages from Estillyen, is a highly allegorical tale set beyond the Storied Sea on the distant isle of named Estillyen. As Jefferson puts it, “Estillyen is equally far from everywhere, but mystically near.”

BlueInk Review gave Messages from Estillyen a stared review, saying:

The author’s writing is skilled, poetic, and reminiscent of the classical period. This is a book to savor, not to gulp; the pace is leisurely. The style is allegorical in part, reminiscent of John Bunyan and C.S. Lewis. The “readings” hearken to Donne and Milton as well.

Clarion Review followed suit:

The author weaves the threads of his story deftly and often poetically, shaping phrases with a lilting rhythm that evokes the cadences of

At that early stage, they were not Readings, they were reflections, from me, concerning the significance of these Scripture narratives.

Yet, when I read the drafts, I thought this doesn’t sound like me. The voice emerging sounded like it was from a another time and place. So, I began to wonder, imagine, as I might. Who, I thought, really wrote these messages.

Thank goodness, I heard about the Isle of Estillyen and the ancient order of Message Makers. Quickly I purchased a ticket. There was a ferry to board, waves to sail, and the Estillyen mist to welcome me.

When I arrived, I was stunned to discover this ancient order of monks offering my exact messages, as dramatic readings, in quaint structure dotted about the Isle. That’s when it really hit me. The messages were not mine, but theirs. (less)

Estillyen Essay Contest: Ten Possible Directions

Messages from Estillyen offers ten portrayals in which Lucifer appears as a real-time observer of well-known Scripture narratives, including the Transfiguration and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In one angst-ridden diatribe, titled simply “The Speech,” Lucifer explodes with theological musings. Seemingly unfazed by the divine construct of Scripture and its story of redemption, Lucifer contends that Read more of this blog post »

“Words are thought descriptors. They project thoughts from anonymity. They transfer thoughts into messages. Messages move the world.”
William E. Jefferson, Messages from Estillyen

“Even in societies where words are often strictly controlled, messages diverse never die. Resembling seeds scattered here and there, they find all manner of cracks and crevices to root.”
William E. Jefferson

“Whatever characterization one may choose to place on Satan, "imbecile message maker" doesn't fit. This was no third-ranking demon out there in the wilderness throwing lines at Christ. This was the manic master who understood the power of words. He spun what he hoped would be a strike. He failed; Christ succeeded. They both used words.”
