I was born in Yorkshire, England, then migrated to Australia at the age of twenty-one. I was always trying to write, but could never finish the stories I began. Instead I drifted around as a singer, songwriter and poet, then became a university tutor and finally a university lecturer. But after twenty-five years of writer’s block, I finally finished the cult novel, The Vicar of Morbing Vyle, and resigned my lectureship to follow my original dream.

Since then, I've had seventeen books published, all fantasy, SF or horror/supernatural, ranging from Children’s to Young Adult to Adult. My biggest success internationally has come with my YA steampunk fantasies, Worldshaker and its sequels. I've won six Aurealis Awards (Australia's Nebulas) and th

One trick is to have a very fixed writing schedule - for me, it's from straight after breakfast to 1.30 in the early afternoon. Then I down tools! Only, later in the afternoon, I think about tomorrow's episode in my head, visualising it and how it'll unfold. A sort of pre-filming. Then I sleep on it overnight, and in the morning it's as if it really happened. I don't know if 'pre-filming' would work for anyone else, but a fixed writing schedule does. Ask any professional writer. You don't hang around waiting for inspiration to come, you start writing - and it doesn't take long inspiration catches up with you!(less)

I'm just hanging on for the ride, swooshing along in a downhill glide. I have to remember to sleep and eat!(less)

Voices on the Coast

Now home after the Voices on the Coast Festival on the Sunshine Coast. Beautiful weather, great audiences – and such a pleasure to catch up with authors I knew as well as meet some I’d never met before. The organisation ran smoothly and perfectly – thanks to Kelly Dunham of Immanuel College. Here she is, testing my guitar:

The festival – of children’s and YA literature – lasted for two days, and so
