Hi Sue, really sorry I have only just seen your question!!!

Then is to decide whether you want a copy editor or a full edit service. The latter looks more at structure of the story but good copy editors will point out stuff like continuity errors.
I used the former, someone I knew through a PR company. However there are several really good editors you can track down via FB.
If you're on a budget the other approach is to get a number of friends to proof read. But they have to be diligent and give detailed feedback. (less)

“Life. It's like a snow globe. From the outside it can look pretty, idyllic, calm. But in reality it's a sham. Look closely inside and you'll see everything is fake, plastic, very small and very, very meaningless. And then every now and again some bastard comes along and shakes the whole lot up.”
Keith Nixon, The Fix

“She crept across the room, avoiding the squeaky floorboard. She almost made it. The door was half open when her father said,”
Keith Nixon, Burn The Evidence

“The derision was obvious in his voice, it cut through her. Tears in her eyes, she turned and ran out the door, pulling it closed behind her, shoes still in her hands.”
