When I feel really blocked on something, my best strategy is to delete massive sections of the work and start that part over again. Nothing is perfect on the first pass. Block is your talent's signal that it's time to revise.(less)

The best thing about being a writer is the creative collaborative opportunities it affords.

I am ambiverted -- meaning that sometimes I am very extroverted and love being around people and sometimes I am a shy introvert. Being a writer is the perfect profession for a creative ambivert. The work itself tends to require a lot of solitude so you can think, but being around people drives that creative energy, expanding your horizons and inspiring you to do your best work.

I will say that the most pleasurable part of my journey in 2014 was meeting voice artist Richard Mann through ACX. Mr. Mann narrates my books. It's been a fantastic creative collaboration that really is magical. When you find someone like that who inspires you and with whom you really love working, it makes all the challenging parts of the work so worthwhile.(less)

Review: Better than Bouillon Works Best for Sauces and Soups

If you live in the United States you have probably seen the ads for the Better than Bouillon line of bouillon. Offered in several varieties, it promises better taste than traditional bouillon cubes and powders and usefulness in more recipes than competitors. This summer (2025) I bought a Better than Bouillon jar in the “roasted beef base” and finally opened it this autumn after finishing my ja

“Love for the beauty of the soul.
I shall love you always.
When the flower of life has gone,
ever I shall find you.
When all is lost and winter comes,
I shall be your spring time.
And memory fades and wilts then,
I shall always find you....
I shall always find you....”
Laurel A. Rockefeller, The Ghosts of the Past

“Princess Anlei to the newly knighted Lord Knight Corann: "A princess does not need to rush into the fray like some …starving creature, but moves deliberately, with a purpose. I did not think for a moment that this gathering would end without you speaking to me at some point.”
Laurel A. Rockefeller, The Great Succession Crisis

“He was a strong and noble lord with piercing eyes of grey.
He sat upon his noble throne shining like the dawn.
His sword flashed like the brightest star.
He led our people well.
Yet here and now he lays in blood pierced with arrows.

He was the friend of many knights.
He loved the warrior games.
His heart was won by a lady fair for marriage they did wait.
A kindly prince, his duty carried him to another's bed.
And on her death true love returned, finally they wed.

He felt the grief of children lost to murder and to pain.
I was the youngest of his blood.
I'll never be the same.
Here lays my father and my lord.
I know not what to say.
Except my father and my lord was slain here on this day.

Here lays my father and my lord.
I know not what to say.
Except my father and my lord was slain here on this day….”
Laurel A. Rockefeller, The Ghosts of the Past

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

lol! I have my bachelor of arts from the University of Nebraska. 111 credit hours in majors of 131. Integreted studies in writing, psychology, and history -- triple major. I was the only triple major in my graduating class of over 5000 to be accepted in Phi
Beta Kappa (America's oldest honor society founded, by coincidence, on my birthday in 1776) in 1995. I will admit I was a much bigger bibliophile before my car accident than after. Reading is genuinely hard for me physically, even with tinted reading glasses and magnification aids.

Michael Hi Laurel - thanks for your Friend request. I'm actually poorly educated and largely ignorant, but thank you, anyway, for your kind comments :-)
