Desiree Banks is a midwestern author who spent a lot of time in the car without a cell phone as a child. This led to an overactive imagination and even longer trips to England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, and Panama. Now as a wife, mother of four, and a high school English teacher, she uses her imagination to travel to other times and places. She hopes you enjoy her 'travels' with her. ...more

It may come out sounding like crap or heading my characters in a direction I didn't want my characters to go at all, but I have still written, I have still honed my skills. Sometimes it comes out better than I could have planned and I get out of that slump. Sometimes I write 85,000 words and erase them all and start over ( take the first draft of The Sheriff's Widow as an example). That is beyond painful, but when it is necessary, I just have to do it. I sing a song in my head a lot like Dorie's: "Just keep writing. Just keep writing." (less)

Right now I am working on a new first person science fiction romance series, the next book in my western series, and an independent romance novel. This process is kind of like dating. I go out with each protagonist and determine which one I am going to fall in love with. Will it be the quirky, revolutionary man from the planet of Parallel? The U.S. Marshal trying to find a new place in the west? Or the high school counselor in Vegas who isn't quite who he wants everyone to believe he is? Then comes the hard part: creating the character's conflict, his love, and finally his story. (less)

The Hardest Parts of Being an Indie Writer

It's been about two years since I have written a blog post. No, I didn't die; I've been writing. And teaching. And earning a Master's. And raising four children. The Marshal's Outlaw has taken three years to write. Now that it's out on Amazon, I have run across the truly hard parts of being an indie author.

First, the lack of feedback. Sure, family and friends offer to read your book, but they are, Read more of this blog post »

“And then you realize one day that you can't remember her scent and nothing smells like her anymore. You can't remember how she feels or the sound of her voice. You haven't thought of her every second of every day. Then--then you feel more alone than on the day you lost her.”
Desiree Banks, The Sheriff's Widow

“I got this ring for you to show others that you are mine, special to me.  But more than that Willow, I got it because I wanted a symbol of the promise I made to you.  I’ll love you, cherish you, and protect you for as long I have breath in my body.  I want you to know that every time you look at this ring.”
Desiree Banks, The Gallows' Bounty

“Your mother doesn’t know it yet, sweat pea,” Boden whispered, stroking the soft hair on Lizzie’s head, “but she’s the strongest person I’ve ever met, man or woman.”
